LPG conversion
#1
Hi all
Have recently bought Legacy estate Twin turbo with VDC and although it may not be as quick as you youngsters beasts its 290 brake horse is quite a challenge for me. haven't come up against any imprezas yet but have blown off everything bar a very nice old cossie 500 on the M5. At mach 2.35 (in cars the legal limit = speed of sound)i couldn't get away from him but i don't think he had the legs to pass me either.
Anyway down to fuel. as my car is an import i am worried about our poor quality fuel. I use only optimax but that is still not 100octane.
I have been investigating LPG did you know its octane rating is between 112 & 117. i find this bit difficult as all the info says it burns slower than petrol yet i thought octane rating was a measure of explosiveness.
Have spoken to a guy with a volvo T5 who converted last year and has done quite a lot of miles he is delighted and says he can't really spot the difference except on the track.
Has anyone else tried it and would it solve the engine wear problems we seem to worry about, it is supposed to be kinder to engines as well as your pocket.
Any input would be greeted with great interest, perhaps we could make my first thread a long and contentious one!!

Random Octane Rating (RON) is an indication of a fuels resistance to compression ignition, the higher the RON number the higher the compression ratio you can run without running into compression ignition. the higher the compression ratio the more power you will develop, hence the huge torque outputs of diesel engines, as there compression ratios are anything between 20 / 30 to 1

graham,
I have a MY00 turbo and have been waiting for the LPG conversion for 6 months or so!! Trouble is, the people that fit the kits are worried about fitting them to Imprezas. I'm sure they will tell you the same, when you enquire about your car.
Apparently there is a WRX that has been converted, but the chap isn't on here... So can't find out what it is like.
I just want to try it, as my car costs a fortune to run...
Cheers Phill C

Hi phill c
thanks for reply
notice you are in bristol too.
the people offering conversions are in brislington on Bonnville trading estate.
they are quite confident that it works. and can do mine the end of jan.
apparently they use a system made by Landi who have been turbo capable for about 4 years. My only worry is that mine is twin turbo and they havent done a twin before.
if you are interested i will post their details.

Hi Graham,
A few guys in the 300ZX club investigated the LPG conversion for our twin turbo 300ZX's earlier this year, however we found no one able or willing to convert a twin turbo engine.
Does the company you are planning to use know of any twin turbo conversions in the UK?
If you can post their details it would be most useful
Cheers,
Trev

A mate of mine is looking at setting up an LPG conversion business. He has done quite a bit of research into it (as you would), so I will ask him whether converting Scoobies (of any variety) is viable.
I'll post back once I know any more.

LPG is not SAD. Graham, your comments about LPG as a fuel are all correct, but I'm afraid there is more to it. The frustration of diverting to LPG stations, only to find they've run out (some little tinpot outfit called BP) was very wearing for me when my other (non-Subaru) car was converted to LPG. Also, I wouldn't let
any car of mine be a guinea pig for an LPG conversion. Lastly, I thought Legacy VDC's had 260bhp.

off topic really but i recently found out that they don`t allow LPG converted cars to tavel through the chunnel.
I have a jeep converted and had thought about taking it to france next year, so have to go on the ferry expensive.
just something to keep in mind should you be planning any cross channel excursions.

I saw a touring car race once where a Calor gas powered car won it!
After jibes on the grid about the pilot light going out, he went and won the bloody race, coming from down the grid, past all the other cars and first across the finish line.
Apparently, after about 6 or so minutes, the petrol cars got hot and became less efficient. The gas powered car, which runs cooler simply carried on at the same power output and went past all the other cars. It was a very interesting sight.
After that, my perception of gas powered cars changed immensely.

Kurt

I have a GTB and am considering doing an LPG conversion, especally now that more garages are stocking LPG (including my local)
I talked to the same people as you, and I think I will have mine done there, but will not be able to afford it quite yet, let me know how you get on if you go for it.
