Default MOT and number plates?

I've got a small front number plate. All the right fonts and spacing - just smaller. Will it pass an MOT like this or do I need a proper sized plate?

As long as the letters and numbers are the correct height and have the correct font and spacing then it will pass, otherwise its an illegal plate and will fail.
Nik.

i thought the size of a plate had to be standard

so if you only have a few digits on your plate you can use a smaller one?

Mentioned this earlier, almost 100% positive I read that as long as the plate itself is off the correct size and made up off the correct materials then its at the testers discretion ( spell ??!! ) if it is readble for road purposes.

was somewhat surprised to read this thou as my car failed its last mot for the font being slightly smaller / different than standard.

Got stopped last week by the police for having a 3/4 size front plate and told to get it changed. They said they were doing a purge on illegal plates in my area just now - obviously got f*%k all better to do with their time. Then on Saturday afternoon they were stopping cars on the mainstreet with illegal plates, exhausts etc.Easiest to change the plate for a legal one for the MOT.

illegal exhausts ?? theres new one on me I did not realise that certain exhausts were illegal ?? I was aware that bike exhausts had to be stamped as road legal ie had to meet noise requiments but did not realsie this was the case with car ones ??

Mine sounds ther same as yours!

- Standard fonts on a smaller perspex and has just got an MOT.

To be honest the original plate just looked too big.

Have to agree, still trying to find somebody to make up a 3/4 plate or anything that isn't tiny. When you only have 5 digits in your plate it looks stupid with all the space. Don't really want to take a jigsaw to it, just get one made up a bit shorter so I can still have standard letters and spacing.

number plate size just has to border the lettering by 11mm iirc ...good news if you're the owner of 'A1'

there's plenty of plate makers on the net (fancyplates.com etc) that will make will make you one up

Yep fancyplates comes highly recomended this side as well, one thing to watch out for is the height off the digits / numbers are smaller than standard but supose this is just to keep things in propotion ??

not 100% sure if they actually do custom sized plates thou ?? neat online plate constuctor on there as well !!

check ebay out as well, bit cheaper.

I have no idea why I didn't think of that site. Used it in the past a long time ago.

They do custom sizes as well as the 3/4 plate. Will check the height issue and get one made up. Cheers for that guys.

I have 5 digits on mine, which are standard size and spacing. I just cut the ends off the front one to make the plate smaller. Passed Mot this week no problem.

Fancy plates did mine.

3/4 size WAS noticibly too small on my newage, by the way.

But, I had a 3/4 size on my old classic, and that looked fine!
