Default Cats on pre '96 imports and MOT's

I wonder if anyone can clarify this for me. What are the rules regarding catalytic converters on pre 1996 jap import cars for an M.O.T.? Am I right in assuming you dont need one? And what do you say to them to make them do the right test? Also I think they must have had a similar non catted car in to compare from. Is that right?

Please help me get this clear in my head for next time

Hi mate if your motor is manufactured before september 95 then you dont need a cat to pass the mot as the car doesnt exactly match the DOT register for emmisions. Some MoT stations dont seem to realise this and do a CAT test anyway. This happened to me back in January, but as mine is a 94 I argued that it doesnt match the emmisions register and they said that I was right and it passed on the non-cat test! Hope this helps!

That only seems to apply if it's an 'M' reg vehicle,

Both earlier & later ones have a stricter test as advised in note 8 in the corner...

First line is for k-l reg
second line is for m reg.
As nessscoob said the important date is pre-september 95.
I have a 93 wrx and it's not on the vosa database so it gets tested as a non cat.

Thats just what I needed

But where can I see notes 6 and 7? Unless anyone can catagorically tell me my L reg wrx is on the dot list.

I can definately say that an L reg wrx IS NOT on the list as mine (a 93 wrx)was MOTed last year without the cat and was passed as such.

Or take your car to an MOT center that deals with imports a lot.I take mine back to the garage i bought it from (they imported it as well) and they showed me the computerised test procedure.
