Question Quetion For Bob Rawle

Evening Bob,

On a previous thread you felt that BP Ultimate was not good for Scoobs.

Would you mind explaining why and, what, if any, harm it would do to the engine?

Thanks.

Kind regards

Simple, it causes the engine's in the Impreza to det.

If you are looking for a detailed composition analysis with a chemical reason then apologies.

Four to six degrees less ignition is usable if Ultimate is the staple diet when tuning.

Before anyone starts on the "my car goes much better on it" responses first of all check what the ecu is doing, a standard UK car will tolerate it, any tuned car (on another fuel, not UL of course) will show signs of distress if run on it. A P1 will roll over and pull nearly all its ign comp map out plus throw most of its fuel comp map in (always does that first).

Just my personal mapping experiences.

Words from a wise man... didn't realise BP could be so much worse.

Question

An interesting comment Bob.

Could you possibly give me an opinion on this...

My car is a 1998 T/tb Forester auto, sports cat/Trust backbox, and I have had it for 5 yrs. Done around 75k now, much of it on Ultimate as there is no Shell nearby but could use an Esso station. Being an auto it is rarely taken to the limit as the smallest lift-off changes up.
As the engine is the basic EJ20 , no remap, what do you think about continuing to use BP ?

I will understand if you would rather not answer here or prefer to send a pm, taken in full confidentiality.

Thanks

Brian

^^^^^^

If the Esso garage sells their SUL then that would be my choice as it's definitely one of the better fuels for Subaru's (probably only third to V-power and Tesco99)..

I'm not sure the TD03 turbo which I think your Forrester has would cause det even with BP Ultimate.

on the couple of times i got stuck and had to put in bp the engine sounded scarily rough and you could without doubt hear det since this ocurred id would rather put in normal unleaded when ever been caught out and drive off boost until i could find a shell station these are my own thoughts.

Evening Bob,

Many thanks for replying.

I use the following: Shell V Power, Waitrose Super, Esso Super, and if I have to use Ultimate ( lots of Shells in Worcs are now BP'S) I put in Millars octane booster.

What's your thoughts on that?

Thanks once again Bob appreciate your input.
Kind regards

Alan MaC
