Default Are Alloy wheelnuts save?

HI ,

I would like your thoughts / experience about lightweight ally wheelnuts ..

The reason I am asking is because I keep getting asked if I can make them for scoobies but have to keep putting people off as I can't see how they can be save?

Surely if you do aliminium nuts up tight it will ripp the thread - or get hot and expand? Causing them to loosen or be a git to get off?

I work with ally everyday and know how fine a m12 thread would be...

Can people tell me there thoughts on these please..

Cheers chris

Hi Chris

This is taken from a seller on fleabay.

"NEW Subaru Blue Lightweight Forged Alloy Wheel Nuts x 20 nuts.
These wheel nuts are of high quality and are made in Japan. They are thread size 12 X 1.25 and are a direct replacement for your original heavy factory wheel nuts.

These lightweight forged alloy nuts weigh 60% less than the standard wheel nuts so will reduce the unsprung weight of the car as well as improving the looks of your car.

I have now sold in excess of 2,500 of these and recommendations from buyers are the best form of advertising and recent comments include:

BLUESUBWRX1: Fantastic products used them on my Rally car and they are brilliant.

RJ ASTON: Amazing.

I would recommend using a six sided socket for use with these wheel nuts rather than a cheap multi sided socket."

Another seller.

"Rays Engineering, the maker of Volk Racing Wheels, has released a new line of performance lug nuts. Made from Duraluminum, these Rays lug nut are extremely strong and light (the Rays lug nuts are 0.8 oz. each compared to 2.1 oz. for the stock pieces)."

These have been around a while & I haven't heard of any failures, & they still seem to be selling well. I have a set of Stealthy Black (of course ) ones from Scott Lowe.

Well I have ordered some McGard black wheel lugs and black locking McGard ones from the sates. These are suposed to be the best. A lot of owners in the US of A have lightweight nuts/lugs.

Yes Chris but as said, with a decent 6 sided socket, & don't even think about using an impact wrench. The threads on the stud need to be in good nick as well.

You will have to get yourself a set & do some "tests to destruction" on them.

I cant comment on the nuts that youre interested in, but I had several German cars which all ran similar nuts, without any problems (the same nuts were fitted to 350bhp versions too).

Been running my car with Rays nuts(not literally) for about a year now with no problems. One thing to bear in mind is not to use a impact wrench but hand tighten using a decent socket as mentioned earlier.

These parts as with any other parts weather it be for a car, areoplane, boat are tested to destruction before getting unleased on the market.
