Burns move to Peugeot CONFIRMED
#1
Richard Burns will be a Peugeot driver next season, after current employer Subaru reached an amicable settlement with both the Englishman and the French manufacturer.
Burns had been at the centre of a 'tug of love' after landing the world title on the Rally of Great Britain last month. While he and Peugeot negotiated a deal prior to the event, Subaru insisted that it had first claim on Burns' services should he take the crown. When this came to pass, a battle ensued between the two prospective employers, and looked likely to go to court until a settlement was reached last night.
In a statement issued today [Wednesday], the Banbury-based Subaru operation confirmed that it would part company with Burns, but refused to release details of the negotiation between them. It had wanted in the region of $10million compensation for the loss of Burns for 2002.
"The Subaru World Rally Team announced today that it has reached an agreement with the British driver Richard Burns over his 2002 contract," the announcement read.
"Following negotiations since the Rally of Great Britain, a settlement has been reached which releases Richard from his contractual obligations to Subaru.
"The team is pleased that this matter is now resolved, and wishes Richard and Robert Reid well in their new endeavours."
Having been prevented from attending his first Peugeot test in Sweden last week, Burns is now expected to make his debut behind the wheel of a 206 WRC at the Monte Carlo test over the next few days. Peugeot is expected to confirm the deal shortly.
Tommi Makinen will team up with Petter Solberg at Subaru for 2002.

It basically says the same, no figures yet released
'chelle it was supposed to be $10,000,000 that Prodrive wanted to release Burns but they are rumoured to have settled for less hence £1,000,000
