Default changing turbo

guys i have a 96 wrx with a few mods i am aware that the injectors are fine up to 320-340bhp so will leave them be but i am thinking of fitting a fmic and making a couple of changes to my exhaust so a remap will be in order. so whilst i am there i am considering changing my turbo i think i am runninig a vf22 at the moment (not too sure but if anyone can tell me how to find out that would be great) so which would be a good one to go for? is it best to stick with a subaru model or try a garret or hybrid?

any thoughts

go for a TD05 16g or maybe a VF35. running that sort of power you would def need a new clutch aswell.will also need a uprated fule pump as well if you don't already have one.

Unless your turbo has been changed at some point you'll already have a Td05 which if all the right mods are in place could make 350

As above: if the car is a MY96 then itll have a TD05 and a Z4 ECU. If its a 1996-built MY97 (which will have a later bonnet and lamps) then itll have a VF series turbocharger.

its a 96 but with the facelift so maybe a 97, already has a possumlink ecu and remap so maybe a tdo5 how can i tell without stripping too much off?

fuel pump has already been done abd a ap organic clutch fitted too so any pinters on where to take it next? see that why i thought of a bigger turbo and a front mount to finish it off?

am i on the right tracks

If the Applied Model Number, found on the build plate, is GC8D48D then its a MY97; rather than a MY96, even though its a 1996 car. Its likely to be an IHI VF as youve said, rather than a Mitsubishi TD05.

ok will check it out in the morning, if it is a vf22 or td05 is there any point changing the turbo or not? will they both be good for 320-350bhp?

as that is all i would like to achieve.

the car has a full 3'' decat pipe, full samco hoses, hks racing induction kit, one of the above turbo's, remap to uk fuel, uprated fuel pump, possumlink ecu should all this see my targets?

or will i need to fit a fmic? also what esle would be needed to get my target?

okj check the model code and looked at the turbo. i cant find the blue plate but on the turbo it has IHI and has the code mentioned so it is fitted with a vf22

so is there any point in fitting a new turbo? if so which one?
or is the vf22 i have fine for my 350bhp top end?

also as for intercooler

i have a wrx so will the standard wrx intercooler be ok?
or will i need a front mount?
or would it be an idea to swop it out for a later spec sti say version 4 or 5?
if i swop it out is it a straight swop or will i need to cahnge anything else?

thanks

steve

I think you might just be ok on your standard top mount but to be honest mate if you're gonna spend the money getting a td05 and remapp i'd shell out that little bit more and go for a fmic. all my opinion of course.

My STI V3 wagon has the VF22 which I believe is only good for 330 BHP tops... so I've been told.

vf22 is only good for 320bhp?

what is the td05 good for?

i know they do a 16g a8g and 20g turbo can anyone shed some light on power figures and spool up time etc?

rather than fmic can it be done with a later version sti top mount?

Don't know about 16g, but if you do a search for 18g, there's quite a few threads that myself and RLE posted when trying to make our minds up which one to choose. (Both went for 18g)

18g, 1 bar by 3000, full boost by 3300.
20g, 1 bar by 3-3100, full boost by 3500. (about 10-15bhp more than the 18g, better suited for higher revving)

16g max 350
18g max 380
20g approx 400

this is only what i can gather from threads off here, and of course depends on other supporting mods that can alter the above figures.

with the larger turbos do you get more lag for example a 16g compared to 20g?

also what is the best step regarding the intercooler? fmic or later sti top mount?

You get more lag yes the bigger the turbo, so a 20g will be laggier than a 16g.

According to Andy F's website:

AndyForrestPerformance

the slanty intercoolers are only good for 300bhp, later 99/00 for 330bhp and MY01 STis 380bhp.

As you are after 350bhp, then to reduce lag go for a 16g, change the injectors to 440s and uprate your intercooler to either a newer top mount or front mount?
