Angry Overcharged for petrol!

Went to my local shell petrol station today to fill up like I normally do. Put the nozzle in to fill up and pulled the handle, the pump clicked for about 5 seconds then started hizzing and spitting petrol out. By the time my car was full the pump was reading 64.35 Litres and £64.29! bear in mind i have a 60 Litre tank! (MY03 WRX). Went into the shop and told the cashier there must have been a problem as theres no way the car would take that much fuel and everyother time I have filled up there I get 50 Litres in at the most. He phoned the station manager but said there was nothing they could do as the pump said 64 Litres had been delivered, and suggested I call trading standards. Phoned them this afternoon and told them the story, but dont know where I stand legally on getting money back and how to go about this. Any suggestions?

Thanks

i have known this happen before the tank witch suppiles the pump you used has run out to below the the recomend leavel most tanks have a 800lts cut off point by rights the tank and pumps should off been put out off use. trading standards will be able to tell you as and when the site last had a mesure cheak on that pump i whould if i was you go back and see if that pump is out of use or any more are not working

What I do is is look at the fuel going in my car to make sure its being pump plus u can normal here it.
Not sure where u stand legal but the shop will not bothered nor will trading standard it will take mth before u got any money back anyway.

Me personally would of refused to pay filled in a form which give u 30 days to pay and then sorted out that way.As u have payed the bill u amitted it really so they won't care.

Looking back maybe i shouldve refused to pay, but thought that wouldve been theft. The guy behind the counter said he would make a note of what happened as i'm a regular there. Will phone shell up on monday as customer service is shut over the weekend. Willl let you know outcome.

Your TANK is 60 litres, however there will be fuel in the filler neck down to the tank plus in the lines from the tank to your engine. This 'could' account for the extra 4 litres (or some of it). Was your tank completely empty before you filled up? As you say you got past the clicks to the extent that fuel spilt out so you could really have put in 64 litres.

Makes you wonder if the pumps dont deliver the correct amount every time. If you hadnt filled up fully, you wouldnt be any wiser.
