It depends on what year you car is, as I believe the later ones 'learn' to adjust to the higher octane fuel quicker .

You might find it adjusts quicker by resetting the ECU , there is a good explaiation of this here http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm scroll down to section 2.4.1.1 'The Fabled ECU Reset'

cheers dave - i have a printout of this but never saw it - theres a garage local to me called pro-tec performance who do a static tune so will book it in the next week and switch over to super.

they said a rolling road tune is harmful to the drive train - is this true?? how else would you get power figures etc

Cheers

I wouldnt bother with either - just Fill with Super, reset the ECU as per the instructions and drive it.

Unless the car is running badly there is no point doing a "tune" after switching AFAK

Is the car modded ?

If not, again, I personally wouldnt bother with one - just let the car idle for a while if you have really been giving it stick.

At the end of the day Subaru didnt see the need for one as std .

As above, you don't need a TT. Warm the car before booting it (5 minutes on drive and/or first 10-15 minutes driving mostly under boost). Cool it after any spirited running by driving the last 5 miles or so under boost and leave at idle for another minute or two when you pull up.
