Default vehicle checks for a long journey?

Hi Guys,

As you might be aware i have been having troubles with my clutch, this is being replaced on thursday. Now on the friday i shall be driving down to penzance and i would like to now if there's any recommened checks to make with the car before the journey

Oil, Obviously make sure its topped up i guess, its due a change soon anyway.

Tyres, Will be carrying a little weight consisting of camping stuff should they be a higher psi?

Clutch, will this be ok with this long drive after just being replaced, i.e. does it need running in slowly????

Any other checks that i shold consider.

Many Thanks
Ben

Fluid levels
Tires - for pressure and damage or un-even ware
Brakes, make sure they not grinding metal to metal
lights, indicators etc...
steering loosness as in too much play and no movment from wheels(unlikely)
make sure your spare wheel is in perfect condition and you have a mini tool box
your anti jack alloy nut
a jack would be nice
knowledge of local shell garages on the way that do optimax
a bottle of water incase you need to top anything up at a service station

Fluids, coolant, windscreen washer, Check brake pads and fluids,as suggested above, a mini tool kit, a few spares, bulbs etc. A tow rope might be a good idea as well as a set of jumop leads. I carry a small tool kit which fits in the middle of my spare wheel with all this stuff in.

The Subaru dealer down there isnt the best in the world but theres a unipart in truro, Unipart Automotive Ltd. 01326372651.

Avoid Bodmin unless your going after 6pm ish. I was down there a few weeks ago and traffic was bad near the roadworks on the A30. 90 minutes to get through Bodmin but we hit it at tea-time.

If it does go wrong and you breakdown then there is a superb garage on the penzance to helston road Germoe, Newtown MOT & Tyre Centre, 01736 762387 and ask for Ken. Top family run business, good service and reasonable priced. There next to the Jet Petrol station near Praa Sands.

Ben,

The clutch will need bedding in ( I think my Exedy one needed a few hundred miles), but a long journey is an ideal opportunity to do this. Just take it easy (no 4000rpm starts) etc for that period and all should be fine.

Other than that, check your fluids, tyre pressures, wheel changing kit, esp the locking nut for the alloys!

Tyre pressures are relative to the cars weight, and it is also recommended to overinflate by a couple of pounds when travelling long distances at prolonged high speed. Off the top of my head, maybe an extra 1lb for each 100kg (small woman around 50kg, reasonably large man 100kg, camping equipment maybe 100kg in total ) plus 2lb for the speed. If normal pressure is 32, I'd think 35 would cover it, but no more than 38 I run 42 on track so it should still be safe, and tyres are usually recommended up to 50lb.
