The feel of engaging the third Gear

The feel of engaging the third Gear
it si a bit wiered, but when i move into 3rd gear the feel is exactly the same as on my old Escort Cosworth. I find this surprising because the cossie was 10 years old but the scooby is new.
On the scooby i find that when you put it into 3rd gear, it feels a bit Notchy you could say (like you are pushing against something from the sides) ? It isnt like totally clean and smooth (like if i go from 3rd down to fourth - the gear just slips down with ease, no notchiness.
Can anyone explain this?

Well it feels like its rubbing against something, and you can feel it through the top of the Gear Shift Lever when going into third. It isnt smooth.
there must be a reason for this -- i cant believe ive screwed the car up already

its the same on my 95 wrx. 3rd feels a bit rough popping her in sometimes, but on a 11 year old car. i dunno if its a subaru thing, or as im not an experienced driver yet. who knows but i know what you mean regarding 3rd gear - again not believing i understand you in the first place

yes it does feel "rough", and i had the same feeling 100% on my old cossie. That cossie was gold and 300bhp, so im guessing this isnt a problem, as i used to go flat out in 3rd gear on that.
i would say it is not a scraping sensation. More as you say - like you have to pop it into place (unlike when going from gear 4 to 5, or 5 to 6, where the change just happens pretty smoothly).
so i would say it is a pop, followed by 3rd gear "catching on", and then you leave it alone.
Interestingly I normally drive while still holding the gear shift (but ive stopped this habit today, as i heared it wasnt too good idea to do - was ok in cossie as you had 2 change gears fast, but given im taking the scooby slow for nowish - ive stopped pushing on the gear stick after changing gear - i wonder if you do the same? and that is what has resulted in the 3rd gear "pop in effect".
