The STI uses stronger internals giving it the ability to take higher boost
and develop more power via a differing ECU.
The suspension is also tweaked to give better handaling.
It's just a more rally focused car.

ffs, where are all the experts on scoobynet, the real ones that can give you definative answers and proof when you need then?
It's just a more "rally focused car"! your kidding aren't you if you really believe that scoobfan, try taking a standard sti in any guise on a real rally stage and see how you do against a "proper" rally car
billythekid, you're nearly there, but carpets? bodykit? do they make it "better" ie faster, stronger, harder?

I've had 2 WRX's, a PPP 2003 and a PPP bugeye, and 2 STi's, 1 bugeye PPP, and 1 2003 standard STi.
STi plus points:
excellent, full on 6 speed gearbox
Brembo brakes (WRX standard brakes are very poor)
more torque, especially at high speeds
feels a lot more stable on sweeping bends
better engine in many ways (read the Subaru STi brochure)
larger intercooler
quicker steering
sharper handling
better material seats
smaller steering wheel
doesn't really need Prodrive or equivilent springs (WRX does)
Doesn't really need rear droplinks (WRX benefits a lot from these)
I'm sure there's lots more I haven't mentioned, but the STi is basically a very focused drivers car, whereas the WRX is more 'watered down', still very good though! If you bought a WRX first without ever driving an STi, you would think it was superb, probably one of the best cars you have ever driven, but...........the STi is a lot better! Hope this helps, and chaps on here who talk too much about the length of their genitals are obviously suffering from insecurity issues in those areas!!! Ha ha ha!

I would only add that due to the engine internals (pistons and valvetrain upgrades) the STi can rev higher too. I used to have a newage WRX and now I have a classic STi and the difference is unbelievable. I am one happy chappy!

Just dug out IWOC material. Regarding a version 4 STi:
Steel crankshaft
forged pistons
STI ECU, intercooler, inlet manifold, exhaust
Uprated engine mounts
STI gearbox
STI quickshift
STI clutch
STI suspension
STI ARB
STI strut brace
aluminium wishbones
stronger bushes
braided wiring
4 pots
better pads

Do you get water spray on a WRX - No
Do you get DCCD on a WRX - No
Therefore it is more rally focused
Dig a hole

Before answering this properley you have to define what you mean by better.
Faster, Stronger, harder does not mean 'better' for everyone..
Easier to drive, less in your face styling, better compromise in terms of handling/comfort. All these could be used to describe how the WRX is 'better' than the Sti.
Oh..and it's cheaper ...all depends on what you're wanting..
