Default Noobie - car pics - wing mirror issues !

Hi all,

Ive been lurking here a bit since I started thinking about getting an impreza, and now I have....so Hello

Heres some pics of my 2000 turbo. Had it two weeks now. Its totally unmodded, still even got those orange plastic bits (see im no car buff) underneath the indicators.

I totally love the car, but have that whistling drivers wing mirror issue. I have cleaned it all out, looked for trapped stones etc. I even put loads of that foamy 5mm tape on the back side of the mirror and underside too. It still whistled - but didnt start till 55mph instead of 45.

Anyone know a fool proof way of fixing this? Its not so bad now Im used to it, but for the first few days it drove me nuts.

Not sure what you're getting at - but its the window seal that is probably whistling. Nothing to do with the wing mirror. I find that if I wind the window up with the door open and then close the door it makes a better seal.

You can also simply clean the rubber seals around the window and the inside window edges to see if that improves the seal.

It is the mirror - when the window is up its totally quiet, unless you push your head to the window and you can just hear the whistling mirror outside.

Also if I drive along at 50 with the window down and the whistle is happening and I then fold the mirror in while driving, the whistle goes away.

I saw it (wing mirror whistle) as a known problem on a Scooby FAQ here:
http://www.gregh.co.uk/html/sip.htm
(search page for wing mirror)

and they said use some insulation tape - which I did - but it just changed the speed at which the whistle starts.

Thanks for the reply though.

Its no real problem, as Im kinda used to it now but at first it was well annoying.

Oh, OK. I wonder if its the gap between the mirror housing and the mount point (ie, the hinge basically). Have you tried folding the mirror ever so slightly to see if that makes it stop? That would at least signify its nothing inside the mirror housing.

Yeah I think it is. And its that gap that I filled with foam tape to see if it stopped.....it kinda muffled it a bit. But was still there.
