I am currently looking out for a Scooby turbo and after checking Autotrader/Topmarques and following up a few adverts, it amazes me how many cars don't have a full service history or the services have been done wrong.

Me: has it got a FSH
Owner: yep, its taxed and a full MOT
Me: yes but has it got a FSH
Owner: No

or

Me: has it got a FSH
Owner: its a lovely car, well sorted
Me: yes but does it have a FSH
Owner: Oh yeh, me mate Dave did it last week, you know the full service, change of oil and filter.
Me: when was the camblet done??
Owner Errr

Now I just wouldn't entertain either of these cars so as a result of skimping on servicing, there going to struggle to sell or have to reduce it by more than the correct servicing would cost.

Whats the general consensus on this.

Does anyone buy a scooby and service it themselves??

I would only consider the DIY route if the car was over 6 yrs old and I'd make sure I did it properly.

Go for FSH, and not just a stamped book, ask for copy invoices from the garage as well.

Unhappy

It is sad times now for cars like ours its not a car that the DIY mechanic can really have a go of, and service history is a must, dealer if possible or speciallist like scoobysport.
Walk away from the cars with part or no service history and documented means that the owner has taken time to keep the receipts (even though most scoobs are thrashed within an inch of their lives on a daily basis but you have to accept that )
Keep looking, there are many more to find out there, if not check out the Private for sale section

I'd want a FSSH regardless. Scoobs are complicated and need the best care. If the owner doesn't give it that - then walk away big bills could come your way. It also gives a clue as to the type of treatment the car could have had.

I'd be happy if it was serviced at Scoob specialist (scooby sport and so on). These are cheaper, but still know their stuff

In general you are right to go for a car with FSH...I did when I bought mine. However there are some of us out there that really do know how to look after a car properly, and when my car is out of warranty (shortly!)I will be servicing it myself, as I have with every other car I've owned. A Scooby is not difficult to service in my opinion. It will go to a dealer only if it needs a Select Monitor. When I sell it, it will have a typed dated service sheet for every service I do and will have bills attached for every service proving that genuine Subaru parts and top quality lubricants have been used. In my opinion it will be serviced better than at a dealer. It will also save me about £2000 in labour charges over my planned ownership, and will also save me the job of checking that the service has been carried out properly...and of wiping off the oily fingerprints....

You wouldn't buy it? I say that's your loss...

I would also say fsh is not worth anything unless you are prepared to phone the garage up and confirm the service took place.

Worked for too many car dealers that have drawers full of service books and other garages stamps.

Also Steve Lawson who's worked on subaru's for x years at a main dealers, has worked at scoobysport but because he has no fancy printed invoice your gonna take a VAT registered garages ivoice over his experience?

Good luck.

wouldn't disagree with with either ptholt or paul h but my main concern is that on following up ads in top marques/autotrader, people don't seem to know the service intervals of their car.

The two examples I mentioned were not forthcoming with ANY sort of service record whether it be main dealer or independant specialist. It worries me that these people buy the car then don't look after it properly and then advertise it as FSH.
