Question

Whats the fastest way to pull away from a standing start.

I found revving to about 3K, then dumping the clutch.

I hate it when you dont rev it, and get loads of lag.

Also do you push it all the way to the red-line in first, before popping it into second, of do you change about 5 1/2 K ??

~5000 and ride the clutch, a bit like the crotch rocket riders do.

Kinda like a fast-ish dump, when you feel that it's starting to bite, let it go...this'll ease up the shock load on the drivetrain, and it'll hopefully not bog your launch.

I find that holding the revs on 4000 and then, when you feel it bite, dump the clutch and floor it ... it feels a bit crude but is fantastic at the same time. I tend not to redline it in first of all gears, 5500-6000 is about right which will leave you in the sweet spot, turbo spinning when you change up into second ( ie: in second at c. 35mph which in my MY99 is c. 3500rpm )

the best way apparently is to red-line it, then dump the clutch, cause the wheels won't spin being a 4wd. that is what the testers do to get the 0-60 times but do you want to give your car that sort of punishment.... i think not!!

~5000 revs, ride the clutch but don't dump it (ouch).

BTW - this is the recommended method of stopping clutch judder (from my local dealer) - apparently cleans up the plates, or something in any case, it's good fun.

In no event must you: coast up to a roundabout (at walking pace) and select third instead of first and try to get out in front of the large lorry

Olly, I asked this very question only last night after reading the Banzai article and all I got were a couple of sarcastic comments.

http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?threadid=51697

Its obvious dumping the clutch doesn't do the car any favours so the best way has got to be a combination of revs and clutch slip. That's how I do it but some people manage to do it faster.

It might be an idea to use a bit of handbrake and/or left foot braking as well - That's what I wanted to know.

Kippax,

So you want to ride the clutch, use the accelerator and left foot brake simultaneously!

Can we watch

i have found the best way to set off is to put a slight pressure on the accelerator,as the revs reach about 2k you know you have to think about changing gear before that horrible whistling noise starts and you are flung back in your seat.you can do this repeatedly until you get to about 60 mph where you run out of gears and have to stay under 2500.
thats how i do it anyway.

Doesn't it depend on how much respect you have for your car? My P1 is continually demonstrated when with friends at present as it is a new toy, which I think you'll all agree when you buy a new car is the most dangerous time, as you want your friends to see the light and realise that the the scooby is indeed a revelation, but you tend to drive past your limit briefly, albeit in rural 'safe' areas. I personally hope they will re-think their choice of T/Boxster/s2000 et al and be converted....

Dumping the clutch to demonstrate a 4wd 0-30 1.9secs is an art and I certainly haven't masterered it. I get it right 1 in 10. When I do I'm always on my own and scream out WHY! Cos every time I do it with above said mate, I make a nasty oily smell and looks a bit silly (so does the car....)

Chopper, I agree with your comment about showing off to a mate and it being the most dangerous times in the car. I also agree with the getting it right bit - if you dail too much the clutch stinks and you get nowhere, too little and it bogs down. I get it right now most times and you get that light feeling in your stomach and it just goes like stink. I never have to dump the clutch though.

There are different ways of doing it. Maybe Craig Hardman is the man to ask. Perhaps he could do a faster 0-60 in my car than I could.
