What year is yours rig ?
I think i remember someone in the know here, saying that the japs fuel only went up to the present RON rating after the early classics, in which case SUL will be fine on a standard early car.
If u ask GC8 on here nicely, he may iterate that point ( or totally deny it )

Early 240PS and 260PS cars don't run as aggressive maps so are a lot safer on lower octane. I think you might be right about the Jap octane increasing mid 90s.
All should be ok on 98/99 but a knocklink is still a wise precaution, especially with Optimax as its octane drops relatively quickly.

My '95 WRX (260ps) with std engine except for Magnex full decat system has had just Optimax, and now Tesco99, from import at 60k miles up to 115k miles without problems, including a few trackdays. Can't fault it - it sounds as sweet as my mate's 40k miler V-Lim and uses virtually no oil.
Tis true about fuel losing its octane rating if allowed to stand for a month or few though, so if I'm ever leaving the car to stand I always fill it straight-away afterwards.

I'm told by Dave who met Bob down the pub the other day who was talking to his mother's 3rd husband's mate's horse who researches for Shell, that Opti loses it a lot quicker than that... Think 2 or 3 points a week once it's in the tank!

Before I bought the Legacy I had 9 points on my licence (down to 3 now). That thing never saw a speed higher than 75 and spent nearly all its time on the motorway. It still went bang. Specifically it holed a piston and then destroyed all 4 bores as it shook itself to death on the M6. Stopped at Charnock Richard Services and it didn't start again.
As for what did we run before Optimax, well there was a time when all SUL was 98RON (as it still is on the continent) for some reason this started dropping to 97. I guess Shell saw a gap in the market and brought out Optimax

I have a 95' Jap import... I have only put in Optimax and has never given me problems and will only use that... and I have had mine since November 2001. Mind you, there is alot of talk about Tesco petrol...
The only time I had to put normal unleaded and added Octane Boost because I felt guilty was when the Hemel fuel plant blew up... there was a shortage then...
Apart from that... its all good... I did notice a difference in accelartion though with normal unleaded... it's not as instant or as sharp...

Check out a few options... it's not cheap to run a WRX (compared to other normal cars) so you may as well fulfill your wants/needs and get the car you desire without a compromise... Optimax or normal unleaded... it's still a thirsty beast and I love it...
Good luck...

The correct answer is to get the thing remapped to run on 97 (or 95 if you're a real cheapskate)
Going to cost me about 700 quid, so I'll stick to the booster for now

Super is fine IMHO for all un-modified pre96 WRX, WRX RA, STi2 and STi2 RA.
Infact they run quite rich. However the maps in Post Sept 94 cars are alot better then the 1993-1994 cars.
Nomal SUL is also alot more consistent then Optimax IMHO.
I would be a little concerned with an STi1 or STi 1 RA, as these run quite lean at the top.
Not sure about 97> as have not seen any 97/98 WRX or STi maps. But I think these were the ones that started using the higher octane in Japan.
