We always use the car park that's by Mothercare. There are two bits - an open bit and if that's full, you can get into the multi-storey at the back.
They're both look reasonably secure, we've never had any problems in either of them, but that's using them on a Sat am, not weekday

depends where you want to be in town. there is a car park in navigation road (opposite the turning to wharf road - which is where you exit from the car park to the rear of mothercare) with a few "well-sized spaces". there are also the temporary car parks at the back of the high street and as the spaces aren;t marked out, they are "well-sized" here too. if you're not worried about dents in your doors, there are loads of other car parks

Use the Park and Ride near the A12 this is the safest car park in chelmsford and has won an award for security.
To be honest my friend works at the council and this is the ONLY car park with security
and cheapest with the free parking and return bus ticket only costing £1.50 per adult (kids free)
