Default MY06 STI wing vibration

Hello everyone,

I'm running an '06 STI which emits a high-pitched whine from the rear wing at around 100mph.

Has anyone else experienced a similar occurrence?

Cheers,

Angus

You sure its not the window rubber? Most STi's make this noise at high speed.

Good point but it seems to come from the back of the car.

Could it be anything to do with the secondary metal wing at the top of the rear window?

I hope these speeds are being attained on a test track!

Have a word with Iain Litchfield on 01684 850999 - he's driven more MY06s than most people around here.

Not sure on yours mate but mine makes the noise when I get to about 135mph. Starts with a high pitch sound which increases in volume with speed.

Its been identified on alot of the new age cars. Its just a little teething problem which doesnt go away.

My WR1 used to have exactly the same whine at speeds in excess of 130mph. I fitted the finned WRC replica spoiler and as well as making the car look the dogs danglies it made the whining noise disappear.

Leads me to think it's some sort of aerodynamics issues with the rear spoiler and front scoop. I say front scoop because it must be dispersing the air at weird angles so that when it hits the rear spoiler it creates this whining noise.

I have a MY05 STI, and mine makes a noise above 100mph, but it does depend I think on which way the wind blows, as it sometimes happens at just above 100mph, and sometimes at about 120mph.
Think it might be the scoop on the bonnet to. These cars aren't what you could call the most aerodynamic cars on the road. As long as nothing falls of I don't mind.

I used to be too busy looking at the bonnet vibrating like a mad thing to worry about the whine noise

my general advise with all subarus is just turn your sterio up so that you can't hear any of the noises the car makes - means you won't worry about what all the noises are

My '03 WRX does this on private testing areas at around 125 up. Sounds like its around the offside front window pillar or window seal, but I've put it down to the front scoop after much reading up and searching on here. Something to do with the rubber curtain underneath it...?

lol ... it is japanese at the end of the day. The interior is a bin-liner so we shouldn't expect the stereo to be any good from standard!

What do you think it is ... a car?????

Yes Buddy, I'm on your side. My My06 Sti does make a whistling sound at a ton, Spoke to Iain Litchfield about it and its the shape of the car, and rear roof spoiler. Quite funny really when the missus is asleep in the passanger seat, she tells me to slow down when she can here the noise lol.

I have an 06 spec c which makes a howl at around a 90...if i crack the side windows down say a millimeter ( not so as to uncover the rubber seals) it stops.

We've not had a problem with the new roof spoiler but you can get a noise from the rear window seals as suggested

my MY04 sti was sent back to the dealers to investigate a random wheel bearing type noise that would appear and dissappear at random, untill i noticed the spoiler bobbing up and down when the noise was 'appearing'.
