In a normal road car full faced is preferable. Bit more protection from the steering wheel etc.

Open faced only really sensible with harnesses, race seats etc. as you don't tend to move quite so much at the point of impact then

Even a "cheap" lid is going to have the European approval (well, most of them) meaning that they have sufficient protection levels for taking your bike on track, so certainly sufficient for a car.

Look for the gold sticker on the back, and check out HJC's or Nitros for relatively decent lids for under £100

Would you carry a new laptop around in a carrier bag? Buy the best you can afford- without the head the rest won't work.

I've got a Sparko Es for about £64 from Demon Tweeks. Shop well worth a visit, large selection, plus you can try them on to ensure a proper fit.

Thanks for thr advice people.

I would never put a second hand helmet on my head, used to ride motorbikes a lot and wouldn't be here if i had.

Will give Demon Tweeks a look.

The problem with many cheap helmets is that they are heavy - which puts more strain on the neck muscles and increases the risk of whiplash in a crash. When I was rallying I bought the lightest helmet I could find and used a neck brace as well - the helmet rests on this and prevent whiplash in the event of a roll (I found out the hard way before and after I started using one!).

I also found it helped with my driving as it stopped me leaning my head in corners - the brain is much better at processing what it is seeing if your eyes are level.
