Question

Hi there,
Just been looking through the owners book and service manual and it says for turbo change plugs @48 months or 60k miles, this should be right as platinum plugs dont wear as quick as normals.

I am wondering why most people who refer to a 15k service say the plugs are changed, why are subaru doing this, anyone got any idea, what have you dealers, sub mechanics got to say ,are we just getting conned again?

Paul & Rich

The official UK change interval for Impreza Turbo plugs is every 30000 miles or Two years. This applies to all UK Subaru 4 Cam engines, ie Legacy 2.5 as well.

The 2 Cam engines (Sport etc) have standard plugs and are changed at 15000 or One year.

I guess that Subaru fit the Platinum plugs to the Turbo + 4 Cams for two reasons, a) their better and b) there much harder to change on the 4 Cam engines, so a longer lasting plug is less expensive in the long run.

Mail me if your not sure with exact details of the car you have.

I changed the plugs in my last scooby at 26000miles and it revved cleaner and smoother. It was like driving a different car.

I changed them myself as the dealer in Hull wanted to charge me £102. It cost me £42 for the plugs and 2 hours of my time. It took me so long because I had to remove the airbox and washer bottle and did not want to crossthread plugs!

When I went to buy the plugs the parts guys told me I may need a specialist tool, they were unsure. As it happens I did - a 3" extension on my ratchet

Scott!,

Yup mechanics do get a bonus if they can do they job in less time. This explains why some of them put in spark plugs with an air gun and crispy duck the alloy head by cross threading it.

By the way an oil change can easily be done in 20 minutes if you had a pit/ramp. The longest bit is waiting for the old oil to drain out.

My local renault garage in Kingston had to fix a sump leak on my car which I had only bought from them a week earlier (Not the scooby!!). They obviously damaged the thread on one of the flange bolts when taking the exhaust off so decided to pack it out with washers and use a completely different nut (With the wrong thread) Because it was still blowing they used some white gunk on the original gasket.

My dad couldn't believe this when he saw it after it (Surprisingly) started blowing. We bought a new gasket (2 quid!!) cleaned all the white crap off, recut the thread on the stud and everything was fine. Why couldn't they have done that instead of bodging it??

Because it isn't their car so they don't give a damn would be my guess, And it may have taken them the whole time to do the job!

That is why I try and do as much as possible myself, just becomes a problem when you need "Special" tools!

May take me longer but I know I'll take more care about it, hence my lower prority on that dealer stamp!

Just the way I see it I guess.....

Paul

15000 breaks down as follows-

Oil Filter £10.11
Plug Washer £0.71
Oil £20.25
Labour £100.00 (Thats 2 Hours at £50ph)

Total £154.00 with VAT

We add screen wash and engine flush, this brings the total upto £164.47

The only two things that should vary between dealers on the basic service is the labour rate and oil cost. The labour time and parts prices are set by IM and should not vary. Labour rate and oil price is upto the dealer. Also, as we do, the dealer may add other items, such as oil flush etc. Some dealers add sundries charges, disposal of filter/oil charges etc.

PS - Scotty there is a special tool, but I guess you can get round it with 3''

Shark,

Do you not even change the air filter at 15000 miles?? So what is different between the 7500 and 15000 mile services??

Kerrrr Thump......!

/Picks self up off floor..

154 quid for an oil change!!.. I have always done them myself, does anyone do their own on a Scooby?

If not why not? I have never placed a huge amount of value in Dealer Service history as long as there is receipts and stuff for parts etc..

Is all this different in Scooby ownership?

Parts used on the 7500 & 15000 service are the same. The diffrence is that a lot more inspection operations are carried out on the 15000.

Air filter is changed at 30000 or 2 years.

Subaru UK require that the vehicle is serviced at a dealer to validate the 2/3 year warranty. 1st year can be carried out elsewhere, using approved parts/oils.

As for dealer servicing, it does make a diffrence to the value and saleability when you want to change.

Shark,

I have always despised garages charging for screenwash. I have a cheaper supply at home and did not request that they top up my screenwash. Do you ask customers if they want this or do you just add it onto every bill?
Now I see why you are called Shark.

p.s. yes i am a tight barsteward

Angry

My dad is a mechanic so you can imagine how much it annoys me to pay some clueless garage loads of money for an oil change just to get that dealer stamp when I know my dad would do a much better job for free.

Inspection operations, is that where your car sits in the workshop while they have a cup of tea and stare at it??

Rip off or what??

jj

I'm called Shark cos of my driving

We have a notice in service recption explaining that we add scren wash and use engine flush. Anyway, if anybody misses the notice and says that they didn't want it I refund the 54p.

Perhaps I should have picked another name after all.....

Oh what with my dad being a mechanic he has lots of nice stories about "accidents" that have happened to customers cars while they have had work done on them....

Shark I bet you have a few you could share with us...

Out of interest does it really take 2 hours to do an oil change? Last time I did one it took 30 mins, and I wasn't hurrying.

Or as I heard about a local Ren**lt dealer they charge say 4 hours labour to change a water pump but if the mechanic get's it down in 2 he gets a bonus and the dealer still charges for 4 hours..

i.e They wanted 400 quid to change the water pump on my wifes company Megane!!! but after plenty of hassle on the phone it dropped too 300 - halfed the labour charge...

Just asking?
