Buying my first Scooby
Hi guys and girls,
I'm looking at buying my first Scooby and I was just wondering if anyone could give me any advice on what to look out for, what typically goes wrong with them, that sort of thing?
I'm 25 in 2 months and I've had a few insurance quotes, best one is £743. I know that that's a pretty good quote but can you recommend any specialist insurers that might be a bit cheaper?
Cheers
Andy

Stick with larger insurers. I was with fluxy with my old car and claims closure is shockingly long. Not been updated in over 6 weeks. Credit that they fixed car quick but i lost lot of money paying out while they get other guy to admit liability.
What scoob you after?
I picked up a classic wrx straight off the boat for 6k with 30000m. only downer was adding alarm and tracker.

That quote sounds about right. Im 24 with full no claims and I just paid £715 on my renewal with Tesco. Only prob is that it costs me another £100 to protect my NCB!!! Robbing barstewards.
What Scoob are you after.....It just so happens that I have one for sale in the "For Sale General" section.

Thats a very good quote - is that for a standard UK Turbo? Imports are Group 20, while UKs are 17.
A-Plan I would say are the best at the mo.
Do a search for tips on buying a first scooby - this question is asked several times a week
I would stick to an un-modified, or fairly standard UK Turbo to start with, ideally with lowish miles and essentially with full service history. Try and get one with a recent cambelt change, and watch out for clutch/gearbox problems as these are pricey. Engines on un-modified UKs are pretty bombproof, especially with 70k or less.
All depends on how much wonga you have as to what you are looking at buying.
I have just bought a MY00 (2000 model, last of the classics) for £5k, but has 95k. IMO the facelift cars are a lot nicer - i.e. '98 on.
Look on this forum for cars for sale I would, normally pretty well looked after.
Cheers,
Ian.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies. That quote was with Admiral but I think I will try Tesco as they insured my mate on his Subaru.
I am basically looking to spend around the 4k mark, can't go above that as I have just bought a house!! Not really sure on the exact model as I have only just started looking around the site!!

That quote was actually for an import!! Quite good in that case! My current insurance company have always been very good in insuring my Renault 5 Turbo, but they wont touch me till I'm 25 for an import...and wont insure me on a UK car till I'm 30!!! How does that work?!?!?!?!
Yeah I'm looking for a standard one, probably rather have an import to be honest, I've heard they are favourable and have the nice added extras! But I might be wrong!!

Agree with the rest, try and get a uk one if you can and service history is essential. If you get an import, get its belt done and a full 'major' service at a scooby speciallist before you run it. Best to start with a clean sheet. This should set you back around 500quid so budget for it if you can.
I'm 23 and I'm with admiral, no tracker, 3 years no claims and I'm paying well over a grand. Most insurers won't touch you until 25 and with a tracker, but Admiral don't specify.
And don't forget, shop around, I spent 4 months without a car at all to get my scooby, looked at loads of imports. General thoughts, most were rough, except the Wagons, they seemed to be looked after, but I don't like the wagons

That is a very good quote, i pay 715 with A-Plan and i'm 33, although this is more than i should be paying paying as i lost 3 years of my no-claims last year - Doh!

guys, are these quotes for FULL COMP???
im 37 with 8 years NCB quote £720 ish, full comp. (protected)
greenlight insurance.
i too will be new to scooby at the end of the month.
bought car from jap import dealer (whom i know)
'96 import 50k £6500.00 plus £350.00 for alarm etc..
my advice would be "dont buy a cheap car"
i have seen lots of performance cars die on people who cannot afford to get it repaired or serviced properly.
as said here, a £500.00 full service and belt change will at least put your mind at rest (i'm lucky as the dealer is doing this for me)
there are lots of ragged about cars under 5k, but with an engine rebuild at £2.5k or thereabouts, you can see where i'm coming from.
take your time and see as many as you can.
drive them all - some pull you all over the road, some are nice and tame.
until you drive many, you will not be able to compare them.
i hope you find a "good" reliable bargain anyway!! - they do exist!!

Cheers for all the advice guys. I'd rather try and buy one from on here, that way I know it will have been looked after.
The insurance quote was definately the right way around, I was gobsmacked as I was expecting it to be the other way around too....but they confirmed that it's 25 for an import and 30 for a UK spec. I'm still confused as to why!! And yeah, it was Fully Comp.
I have plenty of time to find the right car so I will not be rushing into anything. I will be looking for FSH and regular servicing. Preferably a UK spec car as it is my first and I've been told that it would be best for a UK spec one to start off on.
If anyone has any for sale then please let me know. And thanks to the people that already have, if you have any pics it would be excellent. Many thanks. If you wish to e-mail the pics to me then please send them to a_clegg28@hotmail.com

Have a look at this one:

If you don't mind having done more miles, looks quite nice. This shows the facelift interior etc.

Hi Tony,
I like that a LOT, it's exactly what I'm looking for. Slightly more than I can afford tho. I presume you need to get rid of it by the 25th yeah?? Only reason I ask is that someone wrote my Renault 5 Turbo off on Monday morning so I need to wait for some money to come through from that

24 with 4 years no claims. paying £720 on an 0505 WRX with PPP which is a band 20. Try adding a female as a named driver - It would have been about £1k without my girlfriend.

I'm not selling mate, but I got full service history, sti alloys and a stainless de-cat pipe that is loud as.....
Only problems is a bit of clutch judder and a tiny rocker cover leak, which are typical of scoobies and not too much of a problem. In for a service in the next few weeks.
Its pre-facelift so not THAT desirable compared to the others

Nice looking car, make a change from the usual Lexus lights and shopping list graphics on the side of the door.
