It broke....
Hi,
I picked up my new car on Thursday - an MY97 sti v3 555. It was great while it lasted, but sadly after less than 24 hours of ownership it spun a bearing and clattered to a halt outside Noble's Subaru dealership in Penicuik.
So, it now needs a new engine but I am stuck as to what all needs to be replaced, how much it will cost and where to get it from. I have a quote from Subaru but would like to assess all options before deciding what to do.
To say I'm gutted would be putting it mildly, so any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
Merry christmas,
Brian.

Did you not get a warranty with the car? Or was a private buy- did you get it inspected at all prior to parting with the cash?
First of all - forget subaru UK unless you're not paying for the work, they'll charge you a fortune to strip down the engine before even getting to rectifying the problem- you'll be left with a big bill and still no engine.
Give David at API a ring and he'll go through your options with you. It's gonna hurt I'm afraid, but it'll hurt a lot less from someone like him and you could use the opportunity to get a couple of tasty upgrades!
What you must not do is take it somewhere purely on price, Scooby engines require specialists to work on them and getting the local spanner monkey on it will only mean you'll get 300 yards from the garage before being faced with another big bill. Get it done right first time.
Sorry to hear of your bad luck.
All the best.

If your living north of the boarder like myself then I would advise Greersport down in Beith tel; 01505683388 ask for either bill or colin.
They know there stuff when it comes to subaru's with the rally cars they have built and raced, they done the head gaskets of my97 v3 sti when the heads went very quick service and they will always give you a honest answer, it the only place I would take my car now.
Hope you get it sorted.

'Subaru' can't repair that, as they have no access to the correct STI Vers 3 parts. They are not even listed in the British parts CD's and so-on. If they try, they will F*** it up big time.
Call me if I can help you, either on the phone on Wednesday 29th morning or via email / pm on here.
try to have a good Xmas David APi

Same happened to me a week before I got married, so I can feel for you mate. David at API is your man - I got the Engine Room in Hamilton to fit it (recommended by API.) Mine cost about £2,500.00 all in but mine was a standard turbo MY98 UK. Good luck!!
