Not had my car stolen but
£1.02 for optimax in Morecambe !!!
£0.85 for normal unleaded
The difference means I have now filled up with 95 as my manual (STi Type UK) say's it can. Anyone else ?

Seems a big price difference up here normal 95 is 85.9 and optimax is 91.9 or 90.9 (varies).
Not got an STI im affraid but i know my wrx can take 95 though i wouldnt use it. I allwaya thought sti had to have 97/98 and the dealer told me this to.

Well, as its a UK car and the manual specifies the car can run on 95 then the ECU must be able to retard advance sufficently for it to run, albeit with less power.
Its just stupid here, why such a big difference? Price went up with 95 during the price hike, but these profiteering sods did not lower it when 95 fell.
Grrrrrrrrrr

Its costs more but they claim you get more miles per tank so it may well cancel initial cost out. They were proven right about the performance gains so i would imagine they are correct about the economy gains to. Plus its far better for your engine and more performance. No brainer for me.

Why better?
If the octane is resistance to knock, then if the ignition is retarded and knock does not occur, then no damage is being done ?
Will see if the MPG is badly affected, maybe a good point, but can't see it makeing up the difference.

As far as I know, the map runs to the knock limit by detecting it with the knock sensor and retarding the timing to suit, so if you run 98 or 95 you are running with the same margin to knock.
Only problem would be if the ECU could not retard the timing far enough to cope, ie an import designed to run on 100 RON.
Seem to remember from another thread, that Jap fuel did not used to be 100 Ron and the early import Impreza's have a map with a wider range.
Anyway, if mine goes bang, then its warrenty claim time as my manual states in black and white that it can run on 95 ron.
Went to go to my local shell at 85.9 then noticed optimax was 99.9 filled up a tenner and asked them why the price was different "shell sets the prices on optimax not us" b011ox
Went 10 mins down road paid 90.9 at another shell garage, which is now my local..ish fill up
