depends where your car is when it's ticking over.
if you're on your drive backing onto something first thing in the morning then you'll be getting fumes in your car and on start up it can be a bit of a petroly smell
if it's on the open road though it doesn't sound right

Ted,
thanks for your post, as coincidentally i could smell petrol in my MY01 around lunchtime today, and was starting to plan for the inevitable trip to the Scooby dealer.
I had driven to a friend's house about 10:00am, and left about noon. On the way home i smelt a petrolly smell, but assumed that it was something to do with the car in from of me. It was quite strong when i parked in my local supermarket for beer supplies, but faded by the time that i got home.
Hopefully it is a "characteristic" of Scoobies (on cold Sunday mornings), although it is the first time in four years with my current car that i have noticed it.

I had a very strong smell of petrol in my car in the weeks leading up to having a new engine. NOW DON'T PANIC!
The smell in mine was due to knackered seal in fuel pump. Take you rear seats out mate and you'll see some covers about the size of car speakers. Have a sniff around as that's where the fuel pump is mounted.
It may not be that but its work a look.

Only seems to happen on a cold engine and when standing still.
Nothing on the move though.
Assumed it could be sucking the fumes in on itself on these cold still mornings but thought i'd ask.
