people switch mainly to fmic cos they are planning big horse power, but really a good tmic is just as effective! but fmic's do look the nutz!!!

presumably because the turbo was at the back of the engine and would require a lot of pipework (and lag).
TMIC soak up heat from the engine unless you're moving and are completely ineffective at speed. So they're great between 50-90mph

For a standard car and for power levels to a certain point the TMIC is VERY effecient with the flat four engine configuration once moving. This is especially the case for newage STi impreza's.
The only real reason for changing to a FMIC (as this can turn out to be expensive) is if your proposed or current engine mods require better cooling of the charge air when running higher BHP.
I will specifically be looking at the pro's & con's of TMIC & FMIC on a newage in a future ScoobyNet Article.
Regards,
Shaun.

That's the reason I'm going to FMIC - the hassle of fitting a newage cooler to a classic, along with the humongous scoop required to feed it, means that an FMIC is an easier option for a lot of people, with the bonus of providing scope for modifying.

Tath,
Not sure what power your running, but I had an early JDM WRX (many years ago) with the slanty TMIC. The car was absolutely fine standard (240ps) and was also fine with 280bhp once it had been modified.... no problems with that TMIC at those power levels on that car. But, if go over a certain threshold then yes a FMIC may be required (as it would be on a newage).

Shaun.

Whats the "threshold", newage, can it be measured in BHP terms?

im running a sti8 TMIC on a P1. with a big scoop etc, bhp probably around 380 @ 1.5 bar. within 2 months the intercooler tabs had forced open and the seal was popping out, giving reduced boost and loads of noise.
i have a charge temp monitor fitted and when i go on a WOT run from low down with charge temp just above ambient, within a mile i will be up at 50 deg .
Anything over 350, dont bother with all the faffing around fiting on a classic. just put a FMIC on and no more worries. They are miles better full stop.

Buck,
No idea..... should know more in the near future. But I know for a fact it does its job well enough to help deliver 370bhp. The MY05 TMIC is supposed to be even better..... again, I will soon be finding out.
People say these things are known to split, due to higher boost pressures (on the newage). My car has been running 1.5bar (and over at times) for a long time and many miles..... no such pressure problems yet.

Shaun.

I saw 33C max on mine last w/e, whilst bouncing off the rev limiter in 3rd for large stretches of tarmac with GT3 RS's up me chuff!. I also had regular spells at 145mph and even 150mph. I'm not sure why you are reaching these temps Mark? Mine should run hotter as I'm on OE headers and possibly my turbo is less efficient than yours as well The ambients were low though.

Shaun, yes they deliver over that ok, but you will be a bit shocked when you start testing (presume you will be monitoring temp), you will soon realise how close to the edge you are and how quickly the temp rises when you are harry flatters through the gears . look forward to the tests, should make good reading
heres the splits in mine that developed pretty quick. the black stuff is the seal popping out.

I have just replaced my slanty TMIC with a FMIC, and there is a very noticable improvement in performance.
Pulls very hard on boost, would recommend a FMIC to anyone!!!
