Censorship - To What Degree

Oh, come on.
25% of 157 is 39 people.
You really think that 39 out of 3371 members
(i.e. just over 1%) is too large a number to ignore.
The BBS appears to be performing OK (IMHO), you will always get flare ups, that's the nature of the beast. Keep up the good work!

Webbie,
Sorry for being so "present", but I would like to reply...
I think we should all go by the rules you and your moderators set out / have enforced.
I do understand your concern for "the community", and I think it is applaudible. But push coming to shove, you pay for this thing, and your moderators put their time in it.
So I would vote: whatever you or the moderators feel is appropriate or not.
Just as Phil & the previous moderators have proven: you do a pretty balanced job, and I personally would tend to leave the ultimate judgement to you. Easy cop-out ? Not really.
One thing though that was beneficial from the MTR thread: maybe we *should* be our own censors if possible.
This way, you would have more time to go sideways
Theo [promising to shut up now]
PS: I would like to hear the POV of the "scorched muppet", aka Stef

I agree with Theo.
The board should be moderated by the moderators. You have presumably all discussed/agreed what is and is not acceptable and I see no reason for the details of your criteria on acceptability to be dragged into a public debate.
The majority of members are happy with the way the board is moderated and you cannot really expect to achieve better than that. You cannot please everybody.
Personally I think you are all doing an excellent job. Thanks.

I agree with EvilBevel “whatever you or the moderators feel is appropriate or not.”
You put in the time, effort and financial support to keep this BBS up and running, and the role of “moderator” i.e. diplomat – referee – arbitrator - puts you in the position of control as you see fit and reasonable. Generally common sense is the prime requirement, and from your approach to this problem that seems to be there… so over to you…

Why have we all grown so intolerant?
Its as though people are just looking for a reason to be morally outraged (usually about the behaviour of others)?

I know most of the moderators and Simon personally and they are a great bunch of guys. Sometimes its a tough job and on occasions there is no solution without offending or upsetting someone.
Censorship wise I feel anything which could potentially harm scoobynet should be removed immediately eg. illegal or libellous (sp?) postings. A few months ago I would have said that I would like to see obvious "wind up" posts removed but recently there have been some which have actually turned into some interesting debate. This is a testament to scoobynet members, who on the whole are passionate about performance cars first and subarus a close second.
I read scoobynet frequently and see very few problem threads as not only are there moderators but many normal posters with BBS experience.
Obviously with the amount of traffic that scoobynet enjoys there will be issues but I am confident thats the moderators will deal with these when or if they arise.
All the moderators have email addresses available and obviously cannot be on here 24/7. If I personnally spot a thread which might be potentially damaging I would email Simon or the relevant moderator to bring it to their attention and allow them to deal with it. I trust any scoobynet user would do the same. I must also say I have never had to do this on Scoobynet but there is a mechanism in place.
Simon, just an idea but is there a possibility of having a generic email address eg. issues@scoobynet.co.uk which all moderators could have access or be a mailing list diverted to all moderators to see potential problems arising, just an idea.
Cheers

If 75% voted against censorship, why are we now being asked to vote on the level of censorship?
I'm for letting the moderators decide. They're all sensible people, acting on the basis of stated and sound principles, with the best interests of the BBS as a whole at heart. If they decide to close or delete a thread, they will have done so for a good reason and they won't have done it lightly. That's a form of censorship but it's a form that's necessary to keep the BBS worthwhile and to distinguish it from some of the sh1te that floats around on Usenet discussions.
Keep up the good work, guys and don't let the b*ggers grind you down!

Webmaster,
Whether 25% voted for censorship or not, the result was in favour of no censorship. What is the point of a vote if you do not act on the result?
I bet most of the "yes" was the type of person who writes to Anne Robinson anyway!
Geezer

Hi All
I think this thread kind of speaks for itself.
Just to make it clear...
There IS a form of censorship already going on in the form of everybody's common sense, and the valuable assistance of the moderators.
The reason this thread came about was because there may have been a general feeling that there shouldn't even be THAT level of censorship.
The vote showed 25% of a small number of voters who would like to see censorship. I feel that the majority of those people purely meant the level of censorship that we already have.
Geezer - Shut it!!
I'll leave this thread open in-case there is more input from peopl on Monday when everyone gets to "work" . But otherwise...
We will leave things exactly the way they are.
On behalf of the moderators and myslef, thanks to everyone for the kind words and support.
best regards
webbie

I think things are working fine - I don't see any need to change things at the moment.
Keep up the good work.

How about a new 'warning' message icon, like the flamer you sometimes have along side a topic, that warns those of a more delicate nature that the contents may offend ?
At least then they can't say they weren't warned.
I.e If you don't like it don't look at it.
