I'm on the verge of buying a new WRX wagon with PPP but can't find the answer to a simple question in the sales bumpf from the dealer....

....do I have to run the car on Super unleaded (97 ron) or is that just to get best performance out of it?

You'll have to join the cult of Optimax. Well you don't have to, but its the best fuel to use - particularly for a ppp car. 98.6 ron I believe

It is recommended that you use SUL or Optimax, new age cars will run on 95 RON as the ECU will "learn" the RON rating by reading the EGT's etc but it is recommended to use 97/98 RON

Thanks guys...I'm already an optimax club member for my weekend toy...but swapping my everyday 44mpg diesel for a WRX is making my wallet quiver.

I'm afraid to ask the real world mpg question!

dont bother asking about mpg for scoobys it just stands for My Petrols Gone. You open the door, some petrol goes, you adjust the seat, more petrol gone, put the seat belt on, lose more petrol! I have never know such a thirsty car.

Mike Wood of Prodrive says that a PPP'd car won't run nearly as well on 95ron. Best to use Super, preferably Optimax.

As for the real world MPG. Depends on how much you use the right foot: Don't expect any more than 24mpg around town if you drive like an absolute saint! Use the right foot a bit more and it down to as little as low teens!

Fantastic fun though, isn't it!

Low teens...... ...I get more than that out of my Caterham on a trackday!!!!

It's not going to stop me going and buying the WRX tomorrow though

On long runs and driving sensibly, 30MPG should be possible. My best average in my WRX is 32MPG and that is long journeys but a very mixed bag of roads including some interludes where I have not exactly been hanging about - the secret's in avoiding stop-start, silly short journeys and accelarating briskly in useful situations where you can see ahead and not have to slam on the brakes. I know I'm too sensible but I have my mad moments on quiet roads.

Yeah, now you know why Scooby owners don't tend to talk about MPG...too upsetting. You can get half decent economy if you drive gently and cruising economy is not too bad at all. BUT You play, you pay!

Now you're getting it, stick £40 of optimax, drive it like you stole for 150 miles and stick another £40 in. That's the little pleasures that make life worth living!
