Drunk driver died in 130mph crash
A speeding motorist who was three times over the drink-drive limit was killed when he crashed his car after being pursued by police, an inquest heard.
Andrew West, 23, of Royston, Herts, was travelling at up to 130mph when he lost control of his vehicle on the A10 Royston Road at Shepreth on 27 March.
The inquest in Cambridge heard that Mr West had been disqualified from driving shortly before the accident.
On Thursday coroner Mr David Morris recorded a verdict of accidental death.
'Proper' pursuit protocol
Mr West had been spotted by police, driving his high-performance Subaru Impreza, as he made his way home to Royston from a night-out in Cambridge.
The officers had been alerted to the theft of a similar high-performance car and thought it might have been stolen.
As they followed it along the A10, Mr West's car hit a kerb and crossed the central white line.
He was pulled over at a garage but just as a policeman got out of his vehicle to speak to him, Mr West sped off with the officers in pursuit.
'Driving for kicks'
After pursuing him for nearly four miles the officers lost sight of Mr West's car.
His badly damaged car was later found further down the road and his body was discovered in a field.
Police said they found a mobile phone owned by Mr West which included footage of the speedometer of his old car, a Citroen Saxo, which showed him travelling at more than 100mph.
The coroner said police officers had followed proper pursuit protocol and were in no way to blame for Mr West's death.
"His whole raison d'etre seemed to be fast cars and speed and driving for kicks or pleasure," he added.
