Just started the engine from cold, my wife normally has the car in the mornings, so I have not done this for quite a while.

It starts with a nasty clatter which lasts for about 5 second and then goes away.

Could this be a stickey tapet or something much worse?

Good question, but it is the first I checked.

tappits usually give a fast sort of tapping sound while big end noise is a slightly slower deeper rumble if this helps
