Yes, you need one. some people have converted their rear cluster and put it in there.

Seen a few nice conversions

1) In the normal light cluster
2) Thin one, like spoiler brake light fitted below the rear numberplate
3) Inserted into bumper, looks good on a red car

You should be able to adapt one from a scrapyard mate! Or failing that go to halfords and see what they have and whether you could integrate it into the bumper. On the Evo I used a spare red lens! got a bulb holder off a scrapper, and drilled a hole in the back. It's the one on the right on the boot lid! Can't see the join

Older cars can be legal and be missing a rear fog lamp, but they have to be pre 80's or somewhere thereabouts.

UK cars have them anyway, integrated into the cluster. The classic shape car had very different clusters for UK and Europe vs the rest of the world for this reason.

If it is on a bracket hanging down from under the bumper you could always loosen the bracket off and hinge it up out of sight under the bumper.
Come MOT time just hinge it back down.

As SSS says a bracket does the trick.
In my first pic, it's clear to sae as i'm on my hands and knees. The second two pics show it's hardly noticeable

Mine is the same as Brun's. Make sure you check it before MOT as mine recently stopped working as it was corroded inside. May have had something to do with **** from the road hitting the joint of the lense and wearing it away.
Also I forgot to lower mine down for MOT last year. Good job I was present as the garage are not abliged to touch things like that themselves so it could have failed

Likewsie '73 Midget - not required - but personally I'd rather have an ugly fog than a nasty rear-end shunt on a foggy road cos some bint wasn't paying attention!

Easy - i have mine on a swinging bracket.

If it's foggy when i leave the house it comes down.

All other times its put up under the bumper.

I have STi rear lights and no fogs. O/S original rear cluster goes on once a year with built in fog just for the MOT.

Do you get a detailed weather report off the met office each day then?
