Unhappy Subaru, you disappoint me - your loyal, devoted customer!

My Impreza, carefully driven, carefully serviced by your trusted agents, never modified, never thrashed, never tracked, after 57,500miles the brake pads haven't even worn out! ...... a unique Impreza in this world of RoyBacers!

Anyway, upon your excellent Warranty I have relied for 5 full years - never claiming beyond a new Alarm Unit ........ now, today, I receive the offer to extend my Warranty by another 1 year - with eagerness I opened the bulky letter, lots of enticing adverts fell to the floor ... but I, with Credit Card to hand, only had eyes for the reasonable renewal figure ........

I scanned the letter for the line, and there it was,

"You can extend your cover for just £1233" ............
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
My deep sleep was interrupted only by the electric shock administered by the Paramedics, kindly called by my wife upon finding me unconscious with the letter by my side.

What are you doing Subaru???? £1233!! Just £1233!!

Now, do these cars blow up in their 6th year?

Has ANYONE re-newed their Warranty? At these figures its practically going to cover most things that could go wrong? Hardly an Insurance Policy then - just a 'Pay Now more than you May Need to Pay Later' Policy?

Subaru Warranty Services ......... YOU ARE A DISGRACE!!

Pete

Like you said "Hardly an insurance policy", that's just the problem, it's an insurance policy, probably nothing to do with Subaru themselve's, just some thieving multi national insurance company out to get all they can out of you.

John - no never replaced the pads, talked about it when my Dealer said they would need replacing 'soon' (18 months ago) ...... but, been awaiting the squeal that hasn't happened yet???

Of course, if my engine goes KA-BOOM as hinted, I will have been wise to have paid the money over .......................... but, on the balance of probabilities, will it??

My worry is that the Warranty Services know something I don't ......... and my particular year model has a major fault and WILL let go in its 6th year??!!

Now that's just paranoid talk. You said yourself in another thread that an example such as yours should last 10 years no probs!

Tell em where to stick their extortionate extended warranty and enjoy the car, just continue to look after it and all should be well.

I was taught that each time you use your brakes you are changing the energy you have paid good money for; into heating up the discs NOT powering the car!!!

I drive properly ...... with mechanical sympathy ....... and I enjoy the Impreza's Performance now and again - but I ain't no RoyBacer (I draw the line at driving like a dick at all times!)

Pete, don't sweat it! A failing Maf is usually very obvious! If you're really worried buy a knocklink and that'll warn you of anything nasty happening to the engine.

Regards,

NS04 - MY99, one prev owner, minimal mods and driven sensibly with mechanical sympathy....never owned a cap!!! EVER!!!

It's a form of insurance, premiums are calculated on balance of risk. To want to charge £1233 means on of two things (or combination of):
1) High chance of unreliability of impreza's
2) High cost to fix when they do go wrong.

If something bad did go wrong, it's gotta cost more than £1233 to be worth taking out the policy. If something doesn't go wrong but does next year then the fix needs to exceed £2466 to justify it etc.

Now a big job may occur every now and again to justfiy it, but to happen EVERY year would be rather unlucky.

I wouldn't bother. You treat the car ok, have it regulary serviced, know the car etc.

However, if you've not used much in the way of brake pads (cheap) then I assume you've done a lot of engine braking which is less mechanically sympathetic. Either that or you don't do a lot of slowing down

I booked my car in at the dealers this morning for it's 2 year/20,000 service and was speaking to the service manager who I know. He told me that since the prices went up they haven't sold 1 warranty. Be thankful you don't own an Isuzu, he told me that the renewal for Isuzu warranty is £3500

I'm sure the story will be the same at the majority of dealers, but he said that Subaru are fed up of getting stiffed by people modifying their cars, blowing them up, then returning them to standard to claim off the warranty.

They are currently replacing the third P1 engine for 1 customer who they know does exactly that!!

I suppose they are the ones knacking it up for the rest of us, but I guess Subaru may have to rethink their prices if no-one is buying them as I'm sure they still make a profit from the majority of owners who never claim.

Andy

I'm sure there are a few on here doing just that, whether they admit it here or not.

More likley Pete never goes over 30..............hes a mature driver now you know.

Wouldn't it be possible to buy a cheaper warranty elsewhere?

I certainly think that plenty on here mod their cars, blow them up, then claim!!

Making it impossible for us 'honest' folk to get a decent crack of the whip!!

Pete

That said, I don't see many Isuzu owners modding their cars and they have rocketed up in price!

Is it Subaru just trying it on to line their pockets?? After all, one mug caught on £1233 is equal to 4 cute buyers saying no to a £300 fee!!

Had it been a new tax from Labour to pay for those worse off than oneself, then - indeed - they would have my business!!

you are bang on the point where your MAF will be on its last legs Pete, do yourself a favour and replace it, its only £77 and should be considered a 50K miles service replacement item on MY99/00 Impreza's IMHO. I think a lot of waranty claims and therefore the bump up in prices are down to the MY99/00 MAF being fragile.

How much labour time does it take to change?
My MY99 has just had its 87.5k service (actual mileage 66k) so I will probably get it done and make the 90k a HUGE bill (I'll need brake pads all round as well as the camblet change and all the fluids)

you can undo them with a pair of pliers or mole grips usually, they arent too tight.
