Default imports going bang?

Iv just had some random goin on at me on another forum that import imprezas are likely to blow up, and he hates scoobs, they look like cornflake boxes, uk spec are the only ones to buy etc, etc

Whats wrong with the man? is my import wrx with 70k in mint condition likely to blow up? its never had boost upped or nothing! just an exhaust.

The problem is that theyre now cheap and anyone can afford to buy them but not to run them; if you use supermarket unleaded then its just a matter of time, as it is if you skimp on oil quality.....

As more baseball cap wearing f*ckwits buy them their reputation will continue to grow.

There is one piston/cylinder thats more likely to let go; but as the oil galleries are the same on domestic and export engines; it might be suggetsed that he is just a trolling ****.

i think your right fella!

on a positive note, iv actually found insurance today. Nobody would touch me at 24 with 6 years, and no claims, accidents or convictions!

With the noise it makes, im happy to drive it steady everywhere anyway at the moment

Its also worth getting your fueling checked as they are also prone to the airflow meter
giving incorrect readings to the ecu and running lean thus coursing detonation.

WRX's seem to be very solid, its STi's that mainly go bang - mainly due to the higher state of tune and therfore dislike for low grade fuel.

Its generally down to owner ignorance when they do blow up. Your typical person sets their sights on having an STi (because its the thing to have according to their mates down the pub) gets it, runs it on crap fuel, puts ebay style cheap go faster mods on it, and wonders why it blows up at 150 mph

Yeah if incompleate history change cambelt and all idler pulleys (had 2 go last month after recent belt change) gearbox and diff oil needs changing every 2 years (often overlooked by garages that don't know what they are doing) other than that they are prety reliable if only sensible mods fitted and only running up to 1 bar on standard ecu and injectors depending on modle.

out of interest what is standard boost on them? at the moment im still learning about these cars. in fact this is my first turbo motor!

the only engine mods on the car are blitz exhaust and decat!

only other mods are all external sti bits, 18's, massive front brakes, and full cream leather retrim

i knew the previous owner and it has really really been looked after!

Depends on the year of WRX as there are different ecus.

My MY95 WRX has a Z4 ecu which normally boosts at 12.7psi (0.85 bar). However, I have a full decat which naturally raises the boost to a peak (according to my turbo timer) of 15psi (1.04bar).

I have a knocklink and I only use Optimax, did use Octane Booster but after fitting my knocklink realised (for my car) that I didn't need it - assuming the knocklink is working correctly of course, which it appears to be.

All imports would benefit from a remap for UK fuel - for peace of mind if nothing else.

I have left mine, but did consider remapping until I fitted a knocklink and realised I didn't need to. I do however use Optimax always.

Knocklink tells you basically if your engine is about to go pop from det. LEDs on the front - 2 green, 2 amber and a red one. If it starts to light up like a christmas tree, then you back off. When I am cruising at 80-90, the first green lights up from time to time, thats it. Or when backing off suddenly.

I did use octane booster, but knocklink told me no need for my car anyway. My boost is standard though (apart from the slight rise due to decat). If you are looking at raising boost then I would say booster a neccessity until you remap.

Problems are much more with classic shape cars it seems, stronger MAF's now and ECU's less sensitive.

Tsl (along with quite a few places) said that i did not need a remap or octance boosters on a blobeye just use optimax (minium) and the ecu would sort it. You will notice on optimax that there are a few flat spots, i have now had mine remapped and must say it is a different car.

btw
if you do get a remap you will not require a fuel pump as a JDM already has a uprated one unlike the uk car.

You wont notice the performance difference, but it will keep your engine happy.

Remap on my STi5 has made it a monster. Best done with supporting mods such as headers / decat etc...

Knocklink from BRD or XtremeScoobies etc...

Yeah we need to correct him...Imports Do Not Go Bang...They All Do!! UK included!!

nothing to do with oil flow to a piston and crap like that. Usually the problem stems from the nut behind the wheel

Bad maintenance, No mechanical sympathy by the majority of owners (thrashing it to death, or driven by miss daisy). Cheap oil (yes even the main dealers). Mechanical ignorance. No knowledge of Jap cars needed 100ron fuel. Unable to detect bad running or performance issues which long term leads onto more severe failures. Bad modifications (Blizt or similar cone filters, badly adjusted vta dumpvalves, badly adjusted boost controllers, maps etc).
