Default Advice on buying please

Hi all
Ok Im jumping the gun have always wonted to buy a Scooby now I may have the chance sold my Gti-6 back in Jan and have been walking since as I have not known what to buy
I have the money to buy a nice car and just dont know where to start
I have noticed that a lot of the Impreza have had a lot of parts changed some even new engines and Im woundering Y is it just that the owner didnt know how to drive the car or is it there not that stronge an engine
And No Im not looking to start a fight Im just asking its a Jap car I just thought they were tuffer than this when the car has done under 80,000 miles..!
And its the same for the Evo which I have looked at I will be honest I just like the shap of the WRX STi more and is the Type R the only one that is 2 door
As you can see Im trying to do my home work before I buy and I will take me time as I know getting a low millage car is the best bet I bought my Gti-6 with only 7500 and it was 1 lady owner from new
Have a habbit of finding top cars like this I just like to have a head full of knowledge before I part with my cash
All help will be taken on board

Japanese cars can sustain engine problems from being run on poorer fuel in this country......Japanese fuel is approx 102RON and our best is 97RON. The lower octane content can cause problems.

Also number 3 piston is a common problem......perhaps someone else can fill in more detail about this.

UK cars with the lower BHP are probably less susceptable to internals failing, but it can still happen.

I suppose you're right when you ask if it depends on the driver's style....logic would say that a car that's driven hard, very often, is more likely to have problems.

I well skooled in owning good fast cars I owned a series 1 at the age of 18 while all my mates did up there 1.3
I just didnt see the point I was lucky cos the Escort RS was a hard car and you could be a little mean with it Escort really are built to run on what ever you can find to fit the hole
I learnt very fast that if you have a fast car you dont need to drive it hard and fast all over the place every now and again is the best way
I was the same in my GTi-6 I have found its kids in there Corsa's & Saxo's that think there the bees knees
And I cant be a*sed to race about after them I like the pimping factor more now days and as I got a 5 year old I wont people to see him in a nice car
I think its cos when I was younger I wished my mum drove a Cossie and she didnt lmao
Anyway if its downt to the fact I have to be carful what I buy its the same as buying any fast car now days
And I just have to look and find the lowest and least amount of owners car and I should be on the right track
I would like to know more about the piston number 3 problem though
cheers for the advice so far everyone

Put simply, Scoobies are tough, providing you look after them. Expensive oil, fuel (especially on imports) servicing, insurance etc.. often means people can just afford to buy them, but not run them properly. Some individuals drive them like muppets too! If you don't let the car warm up and cool down properly, then expect trouble. It's the same with mods, fit pointless induction kits, dump valves etc and you're running into dodgy ground. If you don't care for the car, it will ruin you!! Run it properly and you're unlikely to have any major problems. As I understand it, there is no problem with piston number three per se, it's just the one that tends to let go first when the owner has not adhered to the above!!

In short, if you get one, FFS look after it, too many fecking idiots buying these fantastic cars as of late!

All the best.

Well Im no idiot I had to drive round in one to many XR3i and the odd Xr2's after my 7th RS I look after my cars and if there is no point in fitting a Dump valve or induction kit I wont
And as for looking after it I sold my Gti-6 99 on a V plate I bought it as it had done 7500miles about a year and half ago I sold it this Jan for nearly my asking price dropped £50 I wonted £6k for it
it had a few marks on it due to stone chips and it had a few scratchs and the alloys were scuffed
NOT me honest I bought it like that cos of the millage I over look things like that if the car runs like clock work and the body work is in say good order
So looking after me car thats no problem Im getting a little confued with all the model types though is there any sort of buyers guid I can download maybe?

http://www.sidc.co.uk

Look in the FAQ section, that should give quite a comprehensive guide to the models.

Kris55,
Euan got it spot on, bad fuel on JDM cars causes the engine failures.
Now, you will probably need to run a car on optimax and octane booster, have a knocklink fitted and not go too ott on the mods if you want it to have a long life (well you dont need to go too ott for you to have fun )
I'll point you in the right direction first>>>>> www.scoobycity.co.uk which is your local subaru group (and a good bunch they are )
But to find a good car you will need to shop around, and you may have to travel a fair distance for the car that you are after...... you could try here>> www.just-sports.org or here>> www.wickedkit.com, or even here>> www.litimports.co.uk, though 2 of the 3 are up in the northwest of england.
Try these for a start, do a search on google, the best you can get really is a fresh import if your worried about engine problems, though there is a large dealer of jdm imports in keighley(sp) near leeds (will be in the auto trader).

Thanks for that advice I fouud a really nice one and it was before you sadi about the dealer which I think is this guy

http://www.k-t-c.co.uk/12545/ktc.htm

This is what I found

http://dealerservices.autotrader.co....12545&pageid=2

SUBARU IMPREZA 2.0 WRX STi Version 2 Tommy Kaira Litimted Edition , 4 Doors, Manual 5 speed, Saloon, Petrol, 1996 N Reg , 40,000 miles, Metallic Silver. I dont mind traveling for a good car I lived in Cambridge when I bought my Gti-6 and I traveld down to Reading cos of the millage
I know that a good clean car is not going to be on my door step and as I know there are more muppest buying these and the Evos I need to be so carful
Its not like the RS Turbo days they could be mistreated and they would keep going
Now days its not so easy
Better stop showing me age the only good thing is as you get older cheaper car insurance lmao
So am I on the right track with this sort of thing I would prefer a 2 door car though only cos it 2 less doors for my little boy to play about with and open into other cars or lamp post lmao

I forgot to ask what is a knock link?
And is it a lot of money to have done
Also some of you ahve said get a decat but what happens when you go for an MOT you have to have the cat on as I was told many emison systems tell the MOT person if the car is supposed to have it and if it dont then its a fail
If Im wrong you can say its ok if I dont ask then I know I could end up getting ripped off
