Default Aluminium welding using a MIG? Help

I'm hoping that someone here can give me some guidance on the above.

I have been welding mild and stainless steel for years, but haven't done much aluminium welding. The only aluminium I have welded was the sump on my GSI cav that was broke due to me dropping it, doh. I really struggled as the only way I could get it weld smoothly was to heat the sump on the gas ring before welding.

The welding I want to do is on my STI8 IC that is going to be fitted to my MY98 WRX. I am thinking that I dont really want to be heating this up too much? Am I right?

Anyway, can anyone give some pointers for a successful job. I have some spare aluminium plate to practice on.

Cheers,

Wayne.

PS Or details of good welders in the Sheffield/Yorkshire area.

I have a £2k Cebora ac/dc tig pack and I fecking hate the thing I have tried and tried to get used to the thing but I cant, the only thing that I have made a good job of was a stainless steel water feature for the garden ,but me brother make it look like a stroll in the park when he comes over to do bits on the rally car (no one likes a smart ****) there again that’s what he does do for a living.

I much prefer to mig weld as nearly any idiot can weld with a mig, me included

Had a practice today on the MIG

Different thicknesses of ali, wire speed, power and gas.

Once you have your settings right and the piece you are welding is fairly warm its a piece of cake.

Phil.A, thanks for the offer mate, but I think I will have a bash first.

Cheers,

Wayne.
