Default MY05 WRX - Howling Noise at speed ?

Still running in as under 1ki but I've noticed on the couple of occasions that around 95/100 (on a private test track of course) that there is a really loud howling noise which seems to be coming from the mirrors - is this normal on these cars / anything can be done about it as it's a wee bit annoying to say the least !

Lightbulb Insulating tape on the wing mirrors..?

Hi.

I wonder if you've got the same problem as some of the Classics..? I picked up my MY00 yesterday and it has 'windy wing mirrors' at speed which is quite annoying, but I'd read about this and apparently some insulating tape might possibly come to the rescue.

With the mirrors folded, place some tape over the gap(s) in the plastic. You can't see the tape when the mirrors are in the usual position and it might give you back your peace and quiet.

Worth a quick fiddle I'd say.

Regards,

Jonty

I suggest not taking the bird out with you if you propose to drive at those sorts of speeds?

I had, and still have every now and again, a really bad "howling" noise on my MY04 WRX. When I first posted, the most logical explanation seemed to be the VIN plate, which, according to one of the more learned scoobynetters, acted like a reed in a wind instrument, and howled like buggery at speeds over 120 (on a private road) ahem.

Good luck in your new car mate - have fun after your thousands up!

I have noticed this twice now at high speed and each time there was a very high cross wind..!

I'd descride it as more of a circular saw noise.

On the subject of newage noises, anyone get the slight whine at precisely 62mph..?

We've had this type of problem thread running on the WR1 site. It seems to be the door rubbers. Subaru do sell a wind deflector to go round the door frame.

I've got the same problem: it's like blowing across the top of a bottle. The noise comes from the windows/window rubber as chris says. To prove this, the next time it happens wind down the windows a tiny amount and the noise will stop. I'm going to look at getting wind deflectors as windows down at 100+ (on private test track of course) is a bit noisy

Had the same sort of problem on my RB5, just changed the wiper blades and the noise has greatly reduced. I'm thinking it may be the built in spoiler on the wiper arm.

one cause I heard of was wind whistling through the gap between the wing mirrors where they fold in.

the cure was to fold the mirror in, stick a piece of tape in the gap and then put the mirror back to its original place

wont hurt to try

As to noise at certain speeds, I had this on a previous car you had to get a certain speed and then you would hear a whine. In the end I think it was either the tracking or the balance of the front tyres.

I had MY05 WRX PPP now for just under a week and I get this horrible wind noice at 120+ from the drivers door mirror too. Has there been a solution to this posted anywhere?

I don't think it's the mirror... it appears to be the top of the drivers window vibrating at those speeds as there is no frame for the window to sit in. Next time you get the noise try pushing on the window (outwards) and you'll probably find the noise goes away... let go and it'll come back!!

Has anyone tried the Subaru wind deflector strips? Do they work?

the mazda 323f has same problem - it is due to the pillarless windows which make it really difficult to make the galss sit right in the rubber.

Default surprised no one else has posted

the howl above 100-120mph is a shock wave vibration from the alumium bonnet against the plastic turbo intake.

if you are feeling brave, sit up and look over at the end of the bonnet whilst doing 120+mph. once you get over 140mph it goes away but then, perhaps the screaming of the engine and the passengers is probably drowning out the noise anyhow!

That would be the bonnet vent. Known fault in all the magazines, bad design.

It's good to see we've got a real concensus of opinion here!
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the number plate yet.

Read it in car magazine when they reviewed the 05 model. The bonnet vent howls and the rear wing shakes at high speed.

Recently noticed a similar noise between 60-65 on my 05WRX. Originally only heard it at higher speeds but now seems to be happening more often. Kind of annoying, hope they come up with a solution.

it's the drivers window on mine, I tested it yesterday, got to about 120 and the noise appears and then if you lower the window it goes - not a solution I know but it must be the window. it's going into subaru next monday for 1k oil change and I will mentioned it to them.

But if that's the case why does it go away if you push on the drivers window and why does the sound eminate from the top back corner of the drivers side window.... It does not come from the front of the car???
