Is it really worth it?
I've just sat down and priced up all the things I want to do to my Scoob, which is a MY93 WRX worth maybe £4000 on a good day. It comes out to £6000 and all that will get me is a 350bhp motor with reasonable handling and doesn't even take into account things like the fact that I'll probably need a gearbox rebuild sooner rather than later on that kind of power and God alone knows how long the motor will last at that power level.
Perhaps I'm getting a bit jaded by the whole thing, but I just can't justify spending that level of cash on a K reg motor
I need a new project, I think.

without going off the subject too much i had a Suzuki GSX550 ef about 12 years ago and i paid about 1700 quid for it and it cost me a fortune to run new back tyre every three months 75 quid, chain and sprockets about the same i only had it on the road for 18 months as it was always breaking down and i worked out it cost me over £4500 in that 18 months
like £900 a year third party only insurance but every time i opened it up on a sunny Sunday blatting down to Matlock it was worth every penny and although it crippled me i dont regret a f**king thing as memories like that are priceless
To be honest if we all start putting our sensible heads on would we by a Scoob what with the insurance, fuel etc. no we would all be driving corsa 1 litres
If you want something different and quick how about a Dax Rush V8
guy at work has one and trust me its bloody quick although crap in the rain

Rev, I know your dilema, I'm about to throw £10k at my 8 year old sport over the next 12 months I won't see the money back, but I will be unique hopefully, in the UK anyhow. Yes I could buy a turbo with the cash and it would have more BHP that what my sport will end up with. But and its a big but, it wouldn't be as much fun or give me as nearly much satifaction when I stand back and can say I built that

From and old government advert about motorbike accidents!!
Think once, think twice, think Bike !
Try this
Think once, think twice, think Bugeye !! Unloved and Cheap as chips and £6k mods would have you in 400 BHP territory and air con !!
Midlife..... Obviously a bugeye owner

And the RBS is how much more powerful, nicer than a std turbo Impreza? Its UK, too!
What does a RB5 get apart from paintwork and interior trim!
Dear dear, for power a jap import and a few mods is what you need!

Saves Modding. ( Who mentioned 600 bhp ? )
As notorious Rev asked, what should he do with his current 93 WRX to get 350 bhp, without spending £6000.
I replied to you, why go for a RB5, it's just a UK car with different paintwork, trim and a badge. Better to get a std UK car of newer year instead.
PS Jap imports are not that crap, they are faster, lighter in most cases and better specc'd than UK cars!
Just the insurance is a little higher.

I've revised my estimates somewhat (i.e. taken off anything remotely "bling") and it drops to around £4000, thats £2500 worth of engine mods, £500 on suspension, £500 on sorting my gearbox out and £500 on brakes.
Still not convinced...
RB5? Why would I pay more to go slower than I currently do?
Bugeye? Well, I've already got aircon and have the advantage of a lighter bodyshell. Besides, I'd end up in the same position I am now, wanting to throw money at it for more power and wondering if it's worth it
As for 600bhp, well that would be silly. I think ~350bhp would be as far as I wanted to go, keeping it driveable but fast.
Or I might just go and by a Daewoo Matiz diesel and save some cash
