Hello all

I'm coming over from the otherside (ford) please dont hate me lol.

After owning a few Escort RST's i'm after a bit more grunt. I've always wanted a Escort Cossie but tbh they are getting on a bit now and the prices seem to have gone up together with the millage.

I quite fancy the Type R version 6. Having no experience with Subaru's I just have a few questions:
What sort of bhp could the std engine, turbo and gearbox be safe to run at?
What sort of trouble can the diffs give u ?

any other info would be great.

I'm really after the basics at the mo like do u have stages of tune like on Fords.. Stage 1... etc?

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

Welcome to Scoobynet.

I think that whatever Impreza you get, you'll be happy. The STi v6 Type-R is certainly a fantastic car, I have a v3 Type-R myself. Do drive one first, on a motorway, as if you have the short-ratio gearbox, long journeys can be 'fun' (3,200rpm = about 70mph if lucky)

As for BHP and engine, I am no expert but I believe that around 300bhp is about the limit you would want to go to before doing more serious modifications such as remaps, refueling etc.

I used to have an RB5 WR Sport and that was 281bhp, well over the claimed power output of the car. That was with the standard engine, gearbox, ECU (prodrive admittedly) and with a full decat HKS exhaust and HKS racing suction kit.

There are stacks of modifications available, some popular first ones are:
full decat exhaust
equal length manifolds
induction kits
uprated fuel pumps and regulators
remap like Tek3, Apexi, Motec, Link etc
geometry setup and uprated droplinks and anti-roll bars
etc
etc

I am not sure about what trouble the diffs can give you. I am pretty sure that the v6 Type-R will have DCCD - driver controllable diff via a wheel near the gearstick. There is an excellent post by John Felstead about how to use the DCCD and what it does.

I would also recommend taking it easy with it, get to know it, maybe do a driving course and settle in nicely before going mad. Some guys have written off their new pride-n-joy by going too far too soon.

Good luck!

hth,
Matt

Hi Matt

Thanks for the info.
Is there any websites with parts so i can see what there is for the Type R and tunning companys. I know of Power Engineering as its only up the road but i belive it is quite pricey...

As u said 300bhp is about the limit before doing serious mods. would that include pistons, low comp? And what can the intercooler handle ? Also whats the std boost pressure the Type R run's at?

Thanks
Paul

Hi,

There are plenty of places available for parts:
http://www.scoobymania.co.uk

http://www.rogerclarkmotorsport.co.uk

http://www.grahamgoode.com

http://www.scoobyclinic.co.uk

http://www.scoobyworld.co.uk

http://www.scoobytek.co.uk

http://www.subaru4you.co.uk

http://www.jap-innovations.co.uk

http://www.brdevelopments.com

http://www.apiengines.co.uk

Some other good sites:
http://www.22b.com
http://www.sidc.co.uk
http://www.iwoc.co.uk

As for mods, it depends how far you want to go - Roger Clark have just built a 500bhp + Impreza but you, obviously, need deep pockets to do that - it all depends upon what you want from the car.

Some other things you could think about I guess include

2.5 litre block
uprated pistons + crank + rods
uprated turbocharger
front mount intercooler
water injection (you should have water spray anyway)

There are some really knowledgable engine guys on here, speak to John Felstead, he really knows his stuff - ignore me

As for boost pressure, I think mine is hitting 15 or 16psi at the moment - but its a crap gauge so it might be a bit off.

Thanks for your help Matt

I'm not after mega power as u do need mega money. Looking at the specs of the Type R it seems quick enough out of the box.

I found John Felstead post about the DCCD was an intresting read.

Two more questions what insurance group does the Type R Ver 6 fall under.
I'm 22 with 2 years NCB's living in a decent area i would have thought it would be mush more than an Escort Cos. Are there insurance companys that only deal with Subaru's?

Regards
Paul

I think that, there is the killer for you! From what I've read on here, under 25 is near impossible to insure that car and may be as much as £3,000 if you do get anyone to quote. Try ringing around, Liverpool Victoria, Admiral, Churchill, Tesco etc, but ring, don't try on-line, you'll have more chance. Check it out before you go any further, is my advice. I'm 43 no claims ever, masses of ncd and the best I could find was nearly £800. Good luck.
