Estate Turbo - advice needed
Hi guys
After about six weeks of constant badgering with the misses, I have finally persuaded her to give up on a family car and get a Subaru Impreza. Problem is, she only likes the Estate versions. I personally prefer the saloon style but hey, an Impreza is an Impreza!! (or is it)???! Is the estate Turbo as fast as a saloon Turbo?? Are they generally in better condition because they tend to attract the more mature driver??
I have about 6-7k to spend so wont be looking for anything near new. I guess about 1997 would be ideal, UK with no mods if possible.
Whats the general impression of the Estate Impreza's - are they a bit, how do you say it - gay??? compared to the 'normal' Impreaz's....
Im new to Scoobys as I am sure you can all tell...
Thanks in advance for any info/advice!
Nick

There's no such thing as an 'estate' impreza ! The wagon is the same dimensions as the saloon but with a hatch back. No difference in performance other than the effect of an extra 30kgs or so.
And saying wagons are gay on here will possibly result in a lynching !!

Hi, wow, what a question...
First of all they're not estates - they're 'wagons' - ok, now they're cool - phew
You'll find massive division here, some people love 'em others hate them. I've got one, and I'd never change it for a saloon, but I bet there's a 100 people who feel the exact opposite.
You're possibly right in your assumption that wagons have been treated better, but its no guarantee, however a good one will be reliable, imminently useful, and certainly avaliable for 6-7K
Performance is 'apparently' (cough, cough) a shade worse, just because they're heavier, but I suspect you'd be hard to tell.
Good luck with the search and let us know how you get on, I for one, would certainly welcome you to the 'wagon side'

hahahaha cheers guys - sorry to use the 'estate' terminology!!
I will refer to them as wagons from now on. Its good to hear that you dont lose any performace (well not much anyway).
I actually like the shape of them and despite not being able to get my ideal Impreza, would be very happy in a Wagon non the less....
Fingers crossed she doesnt change her mind!!

Hi Nick,
I currently have a MY04 WRX 4 door, but my previous car was a MY97 Wagon. Got to say if you have a family the wagon is ideal. I am really missing the extra space and practicality that the wagon has and think that next time I will get another wagon.
If you find a clean one with FSSH I am sure it will last you well. I had mine for three years 30ish,000 miles and it never missed a beat. I am sure you wont regret it.

You would have found up until not long ago that the fastest Impreza along the 1/4 was a Wagon
As you might guess from my moniker, that I used to have a Wagon. In "classic" terms which is where your budget is, there is nothing in the performance. Maybe .1 of a sec on the 0-60 & 2mph on a top-speed run. I used to run a mildly modded Wagon but regularly used to overtake more powerful (P1s, STis etc) on track.
The great thing about wagons is that they're not so much in your face as the saloon, attract less wannagos and less plod

Cheers for all the replies guys. Great to hear some positive views on a Wagon.
Hopefully it will only be a matter of days rather than weeks before I can trade my MR2 in and get one!!

Had an MY99 Wagon... and now an MY04 Wagon.
The classic Wagons are much the same as the classic 'salons', but the new age is quite a bit different. MY04's are deffo taller and not as wide as the 'salons'.
I've found Wagon ownership to give me the best of both worlds. You get practicality and performance in one package....... but with the seats folded forward and the boot loaded to capacity you'll only get 0-60's of around 7 seconds
J.
PS. I use the term 'salon' due to a certain few people who take the mick out of the Sussex Wagon owners. There's nothing wrong with the 'East Sussex Scoobies 555 Wagon Squadron' and their daring syncro parking........ is there?

Had a '96 Wagon and now an RB5. Still miss my wagon and if funds allowed I would have another to complement the RB5 in a heartbeat.
Absolutely nothing wrong with them at all - nobody expects an 'estate' to be so quick unless they're in the 'know'. As above - you get the best of both worlds so buy and enjoy!

I'm now on my 2nd Wagon, a MY01 Bugeye. Just got rid of a 96P classic after 66,500 (s)miles
Some would say (me included) that the wagon actually handles better due to the extra rigidity of the body.
They certainly attract much less 'unwanted attention'
They are just as quick, just as mod'able and virtually anything a saloon can do a wagon can do too, but getting a washing machine in a Saloon would be impossible
Go for it, you should pick up a good classic for that sort of money

PLUS, how many drummers can put a 20 piece drumkit in their saloons......?
None......WAGONS RULE, especially with a few tasty mods, try and go for a FSSH earlier model and buy a scoobyecu.....you won't regret it.
As for attracting attention, they certainly are more stealthy except when you have a bloody stupid exhaust like a Ninja or Firestorm with full decat.....
Skoosh.

Wonder Wagon
Get one, you will not be disappointed.
Mine is a Jap spec import WRX with rare automatic transmission and is a real flyer specially on kickdown. Can be driven as a manual or auto.
I've got a real Scooby-Do (Great Dane) and he fits in the back perfectly!!
Room, performance, stealth = excellent driving experience.

I echo everything said so far. I had a MY99 4 door, and now have a 04 Wagon with PPP. I love the "insane family car" image rather than "rally car on road"!
I think it's a little softer sprung, but I believe that's down to the different model than the fact it's a wagon.
People still get out of your way on the motorway exactly the same when they see the bonnet scoop behind them!

I had an MY95 wagon. My current Scoob is a 4 dr. To be honest, I never really noticed the "additional" bootspace. Bit of a false economy IMHO....
Wagon's are great though - I loved mine!

Another vote for wagons here.
And it isn't only saloons that are rally slags.
And with tasteful mods a wagon can look quite presentable.

Or tweaked

Another thumbs up for the WRX Wagon Auto here
It leaves my Mk4 supe for dead on acceleration & drives just as well.
Suppose if I keep it, I got one for stealth & one for show
I am pretty sure I am right in saying that the import WRX is also a bit more powerful than the UK spec, but check with those that know more than me, I'm still a learner --- Was more of a supra nut but being converted slowly by this new little toy
Go for it m8, you won't regret it & the auto's are well worth trying too

My wagon really upsets quite a few people not "expecting" an estate car to be so quick off the mark

Hey guys thanks for all the replies. I am new to this site and can honestly say that it gets a big recommendation for support. Cheers for all your comments....
Sounds like the wagon is a definate yes then. I will look into getting one in the next couple of weeks, as soon as I can get rid of my current MR2, or trade it in!!
I test rode a WRX auto last week and was absolutely amazed at how fast it was!! Problem I have found with the WRX imports though is insurance - the quotes I was getting for one of them as compared to a UK Turbo were way higher!! Is there that much difference in performance?? How come the insurance companies charge so much more for an imported WRX compared to a UK turbo?
Nick
