I have found a website called www.lucky-ticket.co.uk that has an Impreza STi as the main prize , the odds seem pretty good but before I part with my hard earned cash I was wondering if anyone has bought a ticket from them and if it’s a genuine competition.

It appears to be a genuine competition but you only have a 1 in 2,900 chance of winning the Subaru if you buy 1 ticket.

If they sell all 2,900 tickets that comes to £43,500 nearly double the price of the Scooby so they'll have plenty left for the runner up prizes plus a nice little earner for themselves.

Oops, just noticed its a spot the ball competition as well so even purchasing a ticket doesn't guarantee you a 1 in 2,900 chance!!

If the site is correct, the odds for the lottery are 1 in 14 million and 1 in 25 billion for Premium Bonds !!

So 1 in 2,900 seems pretty good to me. Plus if you can use your skill it must make the odds better rather than worse .

I believe the spot the ball is just to get round gambling rules for lottery draws. i.e. unless you are Lotto you can not have one. A competition is ok, hence the spot the ball.

You will probably find that the location of the ball is to be decided by a judge or panel of judges as well and is not necessarily the actual location of the ball in the original photo.

Think of the odds like this, you have a 1 in 2900 chance of winning £25k
So the tickets fair value = 1/2900 X 25,000 = £8.62, for that you paid £15, so overpaid £6.37
The National lottery (ignoring all the small prizes) gives you 1 in 14mio of winning £8mio (approx) so fair = 1/14000000 X 8000000 = 57p, you 'overpaid' 43p
43p*15 = £6.45 compared to the car draw.
Of course the national lottery pays out more than just the jackpot, and in the grand sceme of things is a far better bet than this spot the ball thing from a value for money point of view...ie Spot the ball makes higher %age profit in every pound.

Correct - from their FAQ page:-

"Why is this a 'spot the cue ball' competition rather than a simple prize draw ?
Under English law we are not allowed to accept payment for entry into a competition unless it is based on skill and not simply on chance. The ‘spot the cue ball’ element means that you need to use your skill and judgement to help you win the prize."

If 2,900 tickets have not been sold by 31st December 2006 then the ticket price will be refunded to the purchaser and the competition will be cancelled.

They say that if they cannot obtain a STI type uk MY04 from a dealer then you get the alternative of £20,000. Tell me what dealer will still be selling a brand new MY04 STI in 2006.

Hmm I guess they expect to sell all of the tickets well before then but you are right the MY04 won't be available for much longer. I think I'll mail them to find out.

2900 people buy tickets (maybe)
2900 people get a chance to spot the ball
1 of 2900 entrants will be the closest to the ball

However, the chance of you marking the ball spot on is a completely different thing altogether

Plus there are some runner-up prizes too.

You will find many sites on the web and people at airports/shopping centres doing a similar sort of thing, but the 'ticket' price is more than £60. As someone who does do the lotto on a regular basis, but with very little to show for it, I felt that odds of 1 in 362 of winning something for such a small stake good enough for me. At least there is an element of skill. I have paid 'a few quid' for a ticket or two and there were no problems doing it. Very simple.
It might be the only way I'll get to own a STi anyway!!

I just got a reply from them, they say that the prize will be an MY04 model whilst they are available, once they have gone the prize will be changed to the MY05 model. Sorted .

Thanks Reliant for letting me know, it all seems above board so I'm going to have a go (or two). I've only driven an STi once but I reckon they are the dog's b**locks

A quick update, I bought a ticket yesterday and recieved it via email a few hours later, so all I have to do is sit back and wait !

PS: If there are any professional players out there that want to give me some advice on where they think the cue ball should be please send me a private message. I reckon I have a good idea but I'm not that good at pool !

Where did you get "1 in 25 billion for Premium Bonds " that from?

If you go onto their site www.lucky-ticket.co.uk on the front page it talks about losing on the premium bonds and lottery and then it says "click here to find out why". In there it states 1 in 25 billion for the premium bonds.

I just looked it up on Google and it is right. There are 25 billion premium bonds sold and only one wins the jackpot each month so I guess that makes it 1 in 25 billion. RIDICULOUS odds !
