Question how do you clean sikaflex(?)/ silicone off body panels?

got to remove my spoiler and aswell as bolts it's held on with some black silicone type stuff that came with the spoiler in the fitting kit.

have been told this is possibly sikaflex or a similar panel bonding agent.

question is, how can i clean it off the boot lid once (hopefully) the spoiler is off? white spirit? meths? or is there something 'in the trade' that is used?

ta

acetone? **** no mate! i use this stuff at work and if you stand in it, it'll melt the rubber soles of your trainers!

don't think it'll go too well on paint.

saying that, if it's gonna get covered up by the new spoiler i don't suppose a melting incident will be a problem. will hold that one back as a reserve option methinks

A tip for getting the spoiler off without damaging it, get some fishing line and use it like dental floss, to cut through then sealant, instead of trying to prise it off.

Nail polish remover is fine on car paint.

From my experience Sikaflex wont come off with it though.

we use it at work too.just get a wee drop on a rag, dont splash it all over the boot.
petrol might work,we used it to take glue off the side of the works van when we took stickers off, worked well.

If it is sikaflex it won't come off...well it will but you'll need a grinder or similar! It's fantastic at it's job but a nightmare if you ever need to take it off

I'd say get some panel wipe (degreaser bought from your local motor factors) and get a (plastic) filler scraper, try to get under (from the side that's under the spoiler) the offending article rather than work through it

Good luck

hopefully it's not sikaflex then, might be a bit of a job though by the sound of it.

i changed my front splitter a while back.the old one was on with sikaflex.
it took ages to get the splitter off never mind the sikaflex.the splitter ended up in bits,i had to chisle the big chunks of sika that were left, luckily the rest was hidden by my new spiltter.

hopefully with rob oneills tip, the spoiler should come off ok (hope so,it's provisionally sold).

just gonna be left with the **** left behing to clear up, with any luck it's a cheap alternative to sikaflex and won't be so stubborn (yeah, right )

It may be easier to get another boot from a breakers ?
Then sell your old one complete with spoiler,
Maybe someone on here may do an exchange on it,
Thats assuming you only want to remove it to fit another ?

Just another perspective
