Default Engine rebuild and crap dealers!

I bought my STi just over a month ago and it started somking at the weekend, took it to a Subaru specialist this morning who said a piston has gone and i've lost compressiion!
I spoke to the dealership I got it from who originally gave me a three month warranty but now they are saying it was a 28 day warranty so not valid anymore! However i've been on their website and it says all imports come with a 6 month warranty!!
I'm now arguing with them over who pays for the rebuild (around £1200)

I thought that a dealer had to give at least a 3 month warranty on a car?

Go onto the web site and print off the 6 month bit and see what Trading Standards have to say.

Good Luck

"Sales of goods act" is your friend here.

Bacilally your car is covered on "non servicable" bits for 3 months. If they argue threaten trading standards & court.

Did the subaru specialist do a compression test or is it just what they thought? Where are you based and who did you take it to?

Sale of Goods Act - the car has to be of merchantable quality, fit for its intended purpose and in reasonable condition given its age, mileage and price paid. A '28 day warranty' is a load of bo**ocks, frankly, and I strongly suspect your dealer knows that too and is just trying it on.

I took it to well lane turbo centre and also Richard Henry Auto's and they both said the same thing, apparently it's been a piston down since i bought it a month ago but i didn't realise as I thought the performance was spot on (it's my first scooby not had any experience of them before)
I noticed a small ammount of oil leaking out but put it down to age of car but when the exhaust started smoking yesterday i got worried.
The dealer has now agreed to pay for the work after I contacted a solicitor through work to get advice (sale of goods act) and threatened legal action

Still without my car for a couple of weeks though, it has already needed a new head gasket and radiator too!
I bought it from Keighley car trade centre and by time i've had an engine rebuild the car will have been in the garage more than on my drive!

The people repairing it are Richard Henry Auto's in Bradford, they have been spot on so full marks to them though and well lane for giving a second opinion!

It seems it had a lot of hidden problems, but they will have to pay for it now!
Should be good as new when it comes back as it's gone to an independant Subaru import specialist to be repaired so they are not trying to repair it themselves

Just to update i've now sent a written letter to them to confirm I will take legal action if they don't sort it completely including a copy of the sale of goods act.
Hopefully they won't argue now.

I'd have thought it would've been smoking right from the start if it had a piston down?

You're getting a refreshed engine so it's not all bad - try and see what they replace and get evidence of it too - just incase anyone else tries to pull a fast one.....

The guy who's doing it seems really good, he had two Scooby's parked outside waiting for engine rebuilds, he's constantly booked up which is probably a good sign as far as quality of work goes anyway.
I've given up with the dealer now i've told them if they don't pay i'm taking them to small claims court end of story.
Just dealing with the Garage who's doing the work now.
