You'll get a 94/95 for £5k, a 96 for £5.5-6k.
i.e. I got a loan for £6k, bought a car for £5.1k then insured, taxed it and serviced it. Therefore for a year (apart from another service) hopefully all I have to do is put in lots of Optimax.
I bought an immaculate M-Reg WRX with sensible mods (colour coding, full zorst, panel filter, tracker, Cat1 alarm etc.) for £5k running 280bhp.
If you are under 30 you are going to pay quite a bit for insurance though, and maybe better off getting a UK model.
I am paying £750 for a MY95 WRX but I am 35 with 7 yrs no claims.
Petrol will cost you a fortune - I get between 15 and 25mpg and you should really be putting in Optimax whether UK or Import (but especially import) which is 89 p/litre for me.
Servicing isn't too bad apart from the 90k one which will cost you £600ish. Interim service (6 monthly) will cost you about £70, and yearly about £150.
Parts etc. aren't too bad. Clutch is worst but you can get a standard replacement fitted for about £300.
Not much goes wrong if you treat them with respect - warm up and cool down properly, use the right fuel etc.
Hope that helps
