Petrol Price Protest

Petrol Price Protest
I didn't come up with this idea, but saw it on several other forums and thought it worthy an idea to spread around. I remember it loosely being tried by some people last time, but its an idea that won't work without everyones (or at least a greater percentage) involvement.
Crux of message is below:
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day"
campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just
laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves
by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it
was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can
really work. Please read it and join in!
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to
think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need to take
aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not
sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers
need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of
petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing
their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the
idea:
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two
biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not
selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If
they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and
BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me
at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach
millions of people! I am sending this note to a; lot of people. If each
of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300
send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the
time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have
reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited
and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have
been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE
HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10
people. That's
all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us
sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all
300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8
days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did
you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to
you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR
PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
Action:
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your
petrol at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p)Jet etc. i.e. boycott
BP and Esso.

The problem with this idea is that I am really rather skeptical whether the intention of the person behind it is genuine.
Smart, annoying computer nerds write viruses to disrupt things.
Dumb, annoying computer nerds start hoax virus warnings to disrupt things.
Dumb computer users oblige them both by falling for them.
This just looks like another version of the "Send an email to everyone you know warning them about this..." chain letters. I doubt whether anyone would pay attention, even if the originator's intentions are good. Too much crap and spam in people's inboxes these days for email to be an effective medium for rallying public support.

given most of the cost of petrol is tax and forecourt petrol sales account for a fraction of the oil companys profits, and opecs caused the high fuel (non tax part!) prices whats the point?

"Negative" action like this is flawed. In truth, in any protest, you will only get a small percentage of take up. Even if you get to tell three million people (the x10 x10 thing doesn't hold out forever due to lack of independence), you can bank on only around a few percent doing something. So the net effect will be to reduce Esso/BP's sales by a few percent for a few weeks, which would annoy them and achieve nothing (as they aren't the ones taking most of the money!!!)
However if you do something more positive, such as a protest convoy, you get a few percent take up that is still tens of thousands of people, that is more likely to get noticed.
Just my 2p!
PS. Always buy shell as well

Its difficult to know what to do as u loose ever way we look, but can we just sit around putting up with this, i dont know about u guys and girls but its killing my back pocket.
i just thought a convoy say with a few other car clubs might at least get some attention to the fact that we are just fed up paying throw the nose.

I think a performance car protest convoy would be the worst thing you could do, and would just give the government the opportunity to say "see, the only reason we have such high tax is to dissuade fuel hungry vehicles".
I just don't think you'd get the sympathy like the truck drivers did last time.

I think trying to rally up some support from the dozens of car and bike clubs would be more effective. 100+ vehicles driving round and round a petrol station (pick different ones every weekend?) would be difficult to ignore.
Not sure how much you'd achieve but, if nothing else, it will let them SEE that people are peed off. And if other motorists feel intimidated by it, as some will, they will go elsewhere for their petrol. And at least it'd be a day out.
I think what it really needs is for the commercial boys to start protesting. Taxi drivers, delivery people, truckers, etc. As has been said before, the petrol stations don't make all that much per litre - you need to get the government duty reduced, which might be less unlikely to happen if the transport infrastructure was being compromised.
I have a different problem - much lower government fuel duty, but petrol here is now as much as in the UK. Why? Greedy petrol stations making huge profits. Lack of competition, you see.

I think you would end up getting more of a bad press than a good result. Attracting plenty of unwanted attention (a huge gathering of cars with full decats etc etc) from dibble... one reason I think for the high price of petrol is too deter people from usuing their cars unneccesarily... like cruising
I can see the headlines now....
"Petrol Heads complain about paying for petrol"
Obviously IMHO

I know what yer saying, it is sh1te but at the end of the day, if you want to drive fast cars... you have to accept that
A, insurance is going to be expensive
B, fuel consumption is going to be cr@p
The price you pay. If you were getting 50MPG from yer mota, would you be quite as bothered about the price of fuel?
I think its a case of accept it and get yer money and have fun in your car or sell the car, get a bus pass and take up knitting. The other option is to form a new political party, get into power and drop the taxes on fuel
IF none of the above, start by getting labour out (not that Im trying to be political, just trying to think of options)
