new car question
I would like a poll and answer to a question that I am faced with right now.
Is a car which has just had an engine replaced under warranty worth as much as an identical car which is still on its original engine?
The engine was replaced because of a suspected head gasket failure, then replacement head, then a crack in the block which leaked oil into the water under pressure.
New engine number no longer matches that on V5 so it would need to be changed with record of the change being publically available.

if it was all done under warranty then I don't see why not. If I was buying and this was proven then it wouldn't effect my value of the car...... although I may try and use it as an angle to get the price reduced.

id personally the one with the new engine could be worth more..
98 scoob.. slapper.
98 scoob non slapper fixed under warranty with new block etc.. worth less than one above?? No, worth more due to new engine, less miles on the engine?? possibly.

newer engine m8
Had it in my Scoob (MY99) & in my 306.....
Makes no difference on trade in or purchase, but made a difference to me - felt much safer knowing a new engine was driving the car

I't probably worth knowing why the engine was replaced, but I'd go for the newer engined one - I'm sure that'd be worth marginally more, as it's a newer, & therefore lower milage engine.

the old engine has done 14,000 miles. the head was replaced last time the oil mixed, and this time they are replacing the block which is coming fully assembled from the manufacturers.

I can see the benefits of having a 'newer' engine, but it would make me more cautious regards the car as a whole. Is the blown engine an indication as to how the car has been treated, or simply a case of bad luck?

The car is already in our possession, but I want rid of it and was wondering if after the work has been carried out, whether it would be worth less money to a potential buyer.
It is my fathers car and has probably been above the 6000rpm about 20 times in the 14,000 miles it has done, and all those times, with me behind the wheel.
Luckily I noticed when the first leak occured by spotting the colour of the trasnlucent water tank.
I have kept a keen eye on it ever since and thankfully the oil level has never dropped below the minimum.
Due to the nature of the crack, it has always been a case of oil getting into the water system. The mayonnaise was as a result of the oil being sprayed under pressure through a narrow crack into the water galleries. This would be made worse as it goes through the water pump.
Crucially no emulsion in the bearings else I really would have noticed it sooner. Having said that, the short block is now being changed, but it has taken them a new head gasket, and a new head to realise what the problem is, supposedly.
Having said that, the car is awesome, sounds great and goes well. Had it not been for these issues, I would be leaning on my dad to keep it, but he is now beyonid convincing. Audi convertible on the way i think!

I'm sure I remember reading something about there never having been a problem with a Honda VTEC engine, & none had been recalled?
May not have been accurate though.
