Question The strange behaviour of my fuel gauge...

No, not in that it seems to go down too quickly, but that it goes up!

Yesterday my tank was nearly empty, but I judged I had enough to get to work and back (about 70 miles). It was about half way between 1/4 and empty when I set out. On the way in to work the gauge was going down as normal and then about 10 miles before I got to work it started to go up! It went to nearer 1/4. Buy the time I got to work it was just above empty again. Same on the way back. Showed just above empty to start with then half way home rose to 1/8 then later fell back to below empty close to home. All travelling was on either M-way, dual carriage way or A roads. Steady driving and no sharp bends to make the fuel slosh too much.

Any idea why this happens? How do the sender units work?

Makes trying to judge range a bit difficult. When I filled up I could only get 44 L in so there must have been another 6 still in the tank (MY95 model / 50 L tank).

As a side note I managed to get 32 mpg out of it since last Friday

GM, have you really got wild roses rambling about in your garage? Aren't the thorns a problem?

Dont trust the gauges.....

Mine WRX01 only uses half a tank to cover approx 200 miles.

After fully filling the tank, and covering 200mls the gauge needle points exactly at half a tank.

Then you get approx 50 miles for the other half.

They lie.

...Or a badly failing MAF sensor...
I'm try to see what the best mpg I could get is. The last week I've been crusing on the m-ways at 60-70 and hardly touching the trottle on moving off. I *hope* this is the reason . Normal driving I get 27-28. Cars in for a service today. Should I ask them to check the MAF sensor?

yoza,

I've found that too...
