Default Whats the score with a Category D write-off???

I've been offered a 97 'R' 5-door Turbo with 90k on the clock for a tempting price. The downside is that it is a Category D write-off and then been repaired, and inspector approved. What sort of money is this wagon worth in the real world??? I've also know the owner and the history of the car since he bought it and it is a nice clean vehicle.

Definition:
D = Definitely repairable (& assessed COR (Cost Of Repairs – at dealer retail price) less than PAV (Pre-Accident Value)).

Having the "Write Off" against it will probably drop the value as I assume this shows on a HPI check even though Cat D and not C.

Cat d is an economical write off.
My 95 wrx was written off on cat D after a front o/s smash.
Because it had damaged the cam pully they wouldn't invest the time to dismantle the engine & to check if it was damaged so they wrote it off, I bought the car back from them and low and behold there was nothing wrong with the engine so they needn't have written it off.

If you know the car and the owner then as long as the money is right I'd go for it.

You may have 'some' trouble getting it insured, alot of Insurance companies, not all, will only insure it Third Party Only, if it's been written off before.

nothing wrong with a crash repaired car as long as the work has been carried out properly and as for a cat d they are usually very minor repairs, dont know of any insurance company refusing fully comp insurance on a crash repaired car and ive had a couple

Insurance aside, I would say it's about right, given the fact a 90k service is appx £700.

If it gives you 3 years motoring and you get back say £1500, thats not bad IMO.

I've also know the owner and the history of the car since he bought it and it is a nice clean vehicle.
This just adds to the value for you.

All Oils and filters, and spark plugs at £12 a pop !

It's a 30k and a 45K combined.

previous car (2.x years old) got written off cat D - was in a shunt - front and rear damage - bootfloor kinked, engine bay kinked, rear roof pillar kinked, along with knackered bonnet, bumpers etc.. Repairable yes but I wouldn't call them very minor though. Assessor reckoned it would need a new shell to be done properly and the cost of this pushed it into write off territory.

6 months later it turned up at an auction as repaired I believe (not reshelled)
