Am i too young to own a Scoob?
Well? 22 (23 in May), full NCB so far.
Should i really be looking at something else? Something that wont cost an arm and a leg to run?
I can afford the car, using savings, but im a tad scared of the running costs (especially reading some bits on here about engines going etc).
Suggestions (and flames i expect) please
Ollie

Running costs are always going to be a problem no matter what age you are, mine costs about £600 per month including the loan, insurance, fuel, servicing etc. If you can comfortably afford that then there is no reason to worry about costs of repairs etc.
At your age, the primary concern is going to be insurance, many companies are not even going to touch you until you reach 25. Phone around and get a few quotes and make a decision from there.

Better check out your insurance m8, you might get a nasty surprise.I'm 31, full 6 yrs NCB and I nearly fell over when I got my first quote.
As far as running costs go, it all depends on how you drive it, and how often you drive it.
I use mine mainly at weekends and evenings. Don't need it for work, so the running costs aren't too bad.
Means you can push it harder at the weekend as well coz you aren't that worried about fuel consumption.

Forgot to mention, ive been looking at a MY00 turbo 2k.
Insurance ive been quoted for as 1300 per year fully comp with covered NCB and th eexcess was £150. So not TOO bad.
Its the servicing that im worried about really.

you are never too young to own a scoob mate....if you want one have one, dont listen to what anyone else tells you, do what your heart says. So what if it makes you skint, you will have owned one. I had a TVR at 23, madness everyone said, but when i got it they were all jealous as hell, had it 8 years and loved it.
I will own a 911 and a catergham before i die also......just do it mate

I had my scoob for 26 months and 40k miles (1999 turbo) and it cost me around £23,500 to run.
This included:
*tyres at around £100 a month (4 every 4 months)
*servicing at main dealer (brake pads @ £120 fronts at every service )
*fuel (optimax and the car averaged 16.7mpg over the 26 months) only 250bhp approx
* Insurance (and that was only £670 for me as I'm an old fart)
* Blown engine @ 86k miles
* Blown gearbox @ 74k miles
* 3 Maf Sensors
* Wheel bearings
* Blown Turbo
The cost figure doesn't include
* cost of car
* depreciation
In summary, if you drive the car hard it will cost so if you are doing it on a shoestring, then forget it as they eat consumables for breakfast if driven remotely hard
Cheers

Servicing isn't bad, providing you know where to take it. Contact one of the specialists, such as Subaru4U, Scoobyclinic, Xtreme, TSL, etc and ask for service schedules and costs. Then you'll know what to expect. On top of that, budget for tyres @ around £400/yr, petrol (a tank will cost £40 and give around 220-250 miles), brake pads £80-150, and that's about it. The only thing I've had to fork out for outside of the normal servicing costs & consumables is a new MAF sensor which cost me £80. Oh, and I just replaced the battery, £45. That's the theory. In practice, you'll find yourself forever trying to finance tuning bits, as we all like to tweak our scoobs just a little

At some point in your life everyone should own either a scooby or a TVR.
Do it now, its worth it just for the grin factor alone.
Get ready for moding, once you start you can't stop !

Just go for it, I did. Bought my RB5 last year when I was 21. Insurance is 1200 full comp 3yrs no claims. I have to say that i couldn't get insured on a Jap import though. Running costs arn't to bad apart from having to service the car twice a year. Mods seem to be the most expensive as i'm sure everyone will agree.

never to young! I had a my99 turbo at 21 for 2 years and bought a new my03 sti last march (dad bought my old one which is the reverse of the usual!). Try privilege (sp?) for insurance as nobody else could touch them for a 21 yr old (£1000 ish but that might have included ppp which you might want at a latter date!) Now with admiral and paying £820 including protected no claims. Maybe think about getting the last of the classics as they should still have warranty with the option to extend it another 2 years.

Just do it!!
Im 23 with 3 years NCB. Im looking for a scooby at the moment (looking to buy in March. should be more around then)
My insurance will cost me £1200, but think about it. Why not do it when you're young and have no commitments. think about how much you take home after tax a month then take away the cost of rent and mobile phone bill then you have a few hundred left over, thats more than enougth to run a scooby.
Do it b4 you get a morgage, wife and kids. If you dont do it know you'll be driving a Volvo when you'll old and married and regret you didnt do it.

You're in a similar situation to the one I was in a couple of months ago. I'm 22 and bought an Evo VIII FQ300, insurance was the biggest concern and at £3409 it was a major decision! but trust me, it's well worth it (I'm imagining the impreza gives you a similar sensation)

can't moan though, if i didn't live at home i wouldn't have the scooby. no brainer at the moment.
ollie, buy the car mate. providing you don't do intergalactic mileage, it's not actually that bad to maintain.

You could always run a 2.0 n/a Sport for a 12 month.......
Gives you a feel of the car before you take a step up.
These guys can give you an idea of the running costs as another option.

Dude!! I live at home with my folks. They live her for a month a year and I only pay £200 a month to live by myself. If cont I would not be in a possition to buy and run a scooby.
Kyl3cook
Whats do you do for a living at that age to buy, run and insure a Evo?

I'm a director of the family business. My parents are retiring in a couple of years, so then I'll be managing director!....I might be able to afford the fuel for the evo then

I was 20 when i bought mine, with 1yr NCB. It's just so worth it for the grin factor - i don't care if I have no money. Its something i want to do before i have a family etc. YES I live at home, but at £50/month rent - who cares. I don't have to help out round the house etc and come and go as I please
Reason I have no money isn't because I have a scoob - it's because I have a scoob and do 30k a year!! Considering buying a second car to commute in seeing as I can't afford a house near work (Cheltenham). Trouble is insurance as I'd have to have 0NCB.!!!

I pretty much think that this reason is only a way of making myself feel less guilty for splashing out shed loads of cash....but when I'm behind the wheel I forget everything! (except how to drive...that'd be irresponsible!!)
