Is it safe to buy a scoob with high mileage
#1
Im seriously considering buying an Impreza and when i eventually get rid of my 2.5 v6 sri, im hoping to have between £7000 and £8000 to spend on one. The thing that i have noticed is that alot of scooby's seem to have quite high mileage on them. I'm looking at a 97 -99. model for my money but the majority i have seen seem to have between 75,000 and 120,000 miles on the clock. Can anybody out there give me a little advice on what to look for when buying one. I dont know what sort of life-span these engines have. Would you recommend that i invest in one that has a fsh. Help me guys.

Full service history is a must with these engines, in my opinion obviously. Generally any well maintained car will keep on going, with the usual parts needing replacing as time goes on of course.

Welcome Henri I had about 6-7k to spend on my dream car (Scoob) obviously, about a year ago, spent months reading articles,SIDC FAQs a must read have a look on the search on here or someone intelligent will post the address up for u later Im sure.Insurance told me I had to get a UK model or a VERY cheap import so I started to try and find a decent P reg at the time for that sort of money but these were all high milers (100k+). A bit unsure what to aim for I went around loads of garages untill I went to one in Weaverham Cheshire, they had a few Scoobs on the forecourt the only thing he could offer me for 7k was an M reg! I asked the owner about imports, high milers etc and he told me the best car for that sort of small money(his opinion) was an ex company car loads of history, high miles, in need of a good polish. 2 weeks later I came across a 3 year old ex managers co. car waiting to go for auction at a reserve of £8250, I couldnt believe the price it had 4.5k of receipts for servicing was MY99 with A/C, dark blue I thought the mileage was goin to ge 150k but it was 92k, a quick test drive, a chat with the wife and the bank and she was mine. She was completely standard obviously and had spent her life on the M6 there were a few minor door dents which were sorted for £65, had here de-catted, drives like new, going to Pro-sport (Stockport) tomorrow for a diagnostics check make sure everything is as it should be, been convinced to use them instead of main dealer from now on.Anyway sorry to bore you with my story but basically nearly a year on I have no regrets or complaints, for that sort of money I would go for the younger well looked after high miler, I wont go into the differences in the models theres plenty of others that will do that for you but this is my humble opinion.Happy hunting

as mentioned above.. my 'ex' scoob..MY97 P-reg i bought in June '99.. it had 52k miles on the clock!! ex company car.. all bills.. no expensence spared on repairs etc.
I've just sold it two weeks ago with 98k mles on the clock.. even more bills/receipts etc Ran a dream.. and the guy whos bought her is very please... he got a bargin with all the nice mods at only £6k IMHO lol
If you can get a GOOD newer ex company car... and its been looked after.. that would be better than going for a M/N reg WRX import that says only 40k miles!!!...IMO
11 year old car with only 40k miles!! as if!!???

I think the reason the imports have low miles is because in Japan they are taxed for the miles they do (must have road tolls or something) I bought a 93 WRX with 42k miles last year and believe me it was immaculate, so the miles seemed about right. no way of checking of course.

An Impreza Turbo with 100k, fully documented history with stamps and details of all oil changes at recommended intervals (or more ideally) is a far better bet than one with 50k miles and little history.
Mine, touch wood, is the most reliable car i've ever owned.
I think you get two sorts of Impreza owners - cap wearing ***-jockeys who just want a car to thrape, and couldn't give a $hit about it; and more sensible owners who appreciate a modern performance classic and can afford to maintain it regardless of cost. Choose the right person to buy from and you're halfway there.

My STI 5 has 118 000 miles now - came to the UK as a new car and has a full service history - every 6000 miles.
Everythings been replaced as per service schedule and you would never know it has the miles on it.
