Ok here's another poll...
The question is aimed at scoob owners who have purchased a new STi, but a responce from all would be nice...
Question is: If you were fortunate enough to purchase a new STi why did you\would you pick the STi over the Evo?
Like i said not everyone has been in a position to shell out 25-29k so if you were, why would you go for an Evo or the Sti.
I've Picked the STi as its at the same price level as the Evo...
Mine was just short of £29k with wheels & PPP or & shiny ****...
If you've picked a Scoob like me let us know, if you havn't and you had 29K burning a whole; what would it be?
Me... This is the first new car i've ever bought... Dropped my company car so in a better position than most.
1, Liked the colour WR Blue with Prodrive wheels, thought it looked better than the Evo
2, It's not as quick as the Evo but I personaly think it looks better and so did the Missus "good reason".
3, I do a lot of M-way mile and the STi is almost as good as my old 330i for cruising, it felt better than the FQ300 i tested.
4, I don't have to see the dealer ever 4.5k miles, halving the servicing costs.
5, I believe the service costs are cheaper at Subaru
6, I love the soundtrack!
7, Did I say "love the soundtrack!"
8, Like the assosiation with Subaru rally efforts.
Thats it.

Exactly the same here, I'm an ex compoany car man, doing 30K miles a year, I couldn't face going to a dealer every six weeks for a sevice, plus I only paid £23.5K with the prodrive spring kit fitted

Dazza, bought mine for exactly the same reasons as you. Would love an Evo as they are fantastic cars but reckoned for 20K of commuting miles a year I would probably be very broke cos of fuels costs, servicing and Osteopath bills!

Mine doesn't apply about a new car but I bought my P1 over a TME as running costs of the evo were much, much higher. Also, the noise alone with full de-cat was enough, although I do get quite cold driving mid-winter with the windows down,

Reliability.
Owned Impreza's for 7 years; and never had 1 day off the road.
Also had an EVO 6; gearbox / diff / clutch problems all by 12,000 miles.
My JDM STi 7 is also a lot quicker than the EVO 6 ever was.

to start both great cars but the sti looks better, there wasnt any noticable difference in performance although the evo is slightly quicker round a track, scooby sounds better, running costs less, better interior and i couldnt think of a reason to buy the evo instead of the scoob so i got the stippp.

drove it ... loved it
+ i do 30k a year and couldn't face all those trips to the dealer.
+ an excellent bunch of enthusiasts.
... and you've got one
... even if it does have sliver wheels

I bought the Subaru STI because .
1. I like them
2. I always wanted one
3. I love the looks (WRC blue)
4. With the Evo they change the damn model every year and it soon looks dated (did you know most Evo owners only keep them a short time? I said most not all)
5. Servicing costs
6. I feel that the STI is a more usable motor and not so highly strung.
7. Rallying (pity they didnt sign Colin, a bit miffed about that)
8. Dont know where the local Bitsamushi Dealer is
9. Couldnt afford an Evo all in one go, able to buy the STI then run it in, buy the PPP and wheels later.

I bought my STi because:
1. My only car so comfort important
2. Lower running costs (if you drive sane-ish)
3. Annual servicing rather than biannual
4. STi easier on the eyes than EVO (IMHO)
5. The distinctive flat four burble
Black '03 STi8
+18" PFF7's
+Carbon trim
+STi carpets
+STi entry guards
+ProDrive Gear ****
+Parking Sensor (God knows why, should've got springs!!)
+RoadAngel
~25.8k
On the TODO list: STi springs (~350), PPP (~2000)
No regrets purchasing the Subaru (my first new car) ... the dealership has been very helpful and I am very pleased with the vehicle.
PS. Happy 2004 & good motoring to one and all!!

Interesting that my Evo costs roughly HALF what my P1 cost to run Another case of classic misinforment...
I know 3 people who have run Evo's and every one of them had far higher running costs than I do.
Fuel - my P1 is actually quite reasonable if you drive it reasonably, borrowed my mates EVO 7 one day and it was much worse.
Servicing - 7500 - 9000 for my P1, 4500 for an EVO
Insurance - as I live in the most expensive place in the country for car insuarnce, this played a big part, 30 & 3 yrs NCB
P1 - £1600/year
Tommi - £2800/year
I am sure you'll agree, in my situation (and many others I'm sure), the EVO is a much pricier proposition.

The main reason I got the STi was because I was dissapointed by the EVO 8, it seemed not to be as special as my 5 was, no where near as aggressive, no faster, much naffer interior.
The STi felt different, slightly faster turn in and that wonderful noise.
But also cost, slightly cheaper to buy, and much cheaper to own. Parts for my evo were sky high (£300 for a starter motor !!!) and a £400 service every 4500 miles. I do miss my 5 though.

Fuel - No worse at all, just has a smaller tank so looks like it uses more... 40 litres Vs 55?
I rarely manage to get over £30's worth of fuel in there!
4500 for AYC, te it to a specialist & it's £80, other servicing is easily obtainable for around £100 for a basic service.
9000 miles for a P1 or 6 months, Evo is still every 6 months...
The only downside I can see is the insurance? I assume it wasnt a UK car that you were looking at?
If my Evo was a UK car (it isnt) my insurance company wanted LESS than I paid for the P1, as it stands it's less than £100 more
Brave having a thieves magnet in that area then im paranoid about my car going missing all the time

Pretty much the same as everybody else so far but I'll add mine anyway.
1, Always wanted a scooby.
2, The noise
3, Better interior.
4, Lower service intervals.
5, IMO the EVO8 doesn't look as good.
6, Ever so slightly cheaper.
7, Probably the biggest on this, The Mitsi dealer was a total W~@#*$r when I went to enquire about one (anybody around Edin will know who I'm talking about)so much so I ordered the STi the next day.
8, To top it off I found this place just before I collected it
John.

We may be on STi8 and Evo 8 but that still doesnt alter the fact that the Evo changes number pretty much every year.........
So what was last years EVO then, the 7 and what is this EVO? An 8.
What was last years STI? and this years?
Doh.........

I bought any STI7 over an EVO mainly due to the flat four burble. Also I think the equivalent EVO 7 or 8 has been tamed down too much in looks. I reckon the EVO 6 was by far the best looking due to its aggresive looks.

Yep the cost this is deffo up thier in the reasons, as I do quite a bit of mileage the service costs are very high for the Mitsy.
Autocar just serviced thier test car and the 4.5k was £243.52...
My 10k service was £154.20. the last one they had cost £595 for the 9k mile service.
One of the quotes from Autocar-mag, "Thiers a time and a place or the Evo, and it not on a M-way or in town"
Thats what I found when I tested an 8 FQ300... it was bang on the same price as mine 28.5k, I'd have probably had one but I do do alot of M-way miles and running the Kid about. The Scoob for me does both roles very very well, M-way is v-good and its Mad-with soundtrack when needed. I must admit I did like the Evo but as a low mileage and weekend or track day tool.
Also driving over the moors yesterday, with the back windows down... Oh my god!!! I wasn't bothered that an Evo would have made it to the 110 I got to, 1 second quicker... the scoob felt & sounded awsome!
Then I got on the M-way @ 29mpg, and picked the kid up.
Fair to say I like Evo's for thier purpose, thing is I also think we and the people who buy Evo's are one and the same but with different goals and limits for thier Rice rocket fix.
it's good to see the main reason behind getting a scoob is the excelent allround fast motor it is, and it certainly is good to be part of a great fellowship.
Cheers team!

1) I've liked the look of Imprezas for a long time, though actually knew little about them.
2) IMO EVO's always look(ed) massively threatening and I wasn't particularly keen on the looks.
3) I wanted a car more comfortable for doing longer journeys and a bit of fun as I just came off a company car scheme.
Narrowed it down to a FIAT coupe, RB5, P1 or Audi TT. Couldn't TT in the end as a mate got one. Watched two P1s and an RB5 whiz off forecourts under my nose before I got the P1.
Now it could be said that the P1 is aggresive looking and it's hardly a motorway cruiser on 18s and returning 22mpg....I guess I got swayed by the vorpal acceleration in 3rd.
Vindaloo.
