Knocklink actually saved your engine?

Looking into buying one from BR.. also the Lambda job.. Cr@p looking cases tho..
Has anyone actually saved their engine from 'D E T O N A T I O N' amd internal core meltdown.. from reacting to one of these..
Just interested in how frequently this happens!
However I can appreciate that it depends on how the car is tuned, ie boost controller, fueling, cooling etc..
Cheers

What is beyond doubt is that detonation does kills engines, either as a result of cumulative damage, or, in serious cases, instantaneously. Thus, a device that warns of knock on a real-time, audio/visual basis will, if heeded, lessen the chances of your engine coming to a premature end.

I tuned my original engine to over 200 BHP/litre using a knocklink, wideband O2 meter and commonsense. It was still running sweetly before I removed it. Without a knocklink I would not have got this far.

Now all you need to do is find a way of packing commonsense in a small plastic box that can be installed in a car and sold for between £50 and £100, and you can give up doctoring for good!
Merry Xmas John!

Monkey.. the question really was to find out how frequently these things alert you to danger.. but it seems from other threads that its a good thing to get one anyway.
I will be more specific before asking 'silly' questions..

Answer: whenever it detects knock!
Again, with the best will in the world it's a slightly pointless question, as none of us drive your car, with the petrol you use, and under the conditions and in the style in which you drive it.
There's no point any of us telling you how frequently the lights come on on our cars, as it's not like this gives you any sort of yardstick.

I'm hearing ya!
Just soo much to take in... I initially wanted to purchase a 'scooby'... a few months back .. I was directed to this site.... oh my god!! I can see this may take over my life lol
Now I concern myself with the inner workings of the engine (which I know little..) when I was just looking for a nice car with a big spolier! lol
All the best guys.
Have a great xmas.

lol! Pretty soon you'll be forgetting what the missus looks like, and she'll be thinking you're knocking someone else off on account of you always "taking the scenic route" home from work.
Spot on putting the KnockLink on the car before you do anything else, as this, more than any other single device, will make sure the other mods you make don't unduly risk the car's health. Add a boost gauge, oil pressure/temp gauges, and an AFR meter (ideally in that order), and you'll be able to stay on top of the car and hopefully catch any potential problem before it does damage.
It's fair comment about the KnockLink/AFR meter boxes not adding anything positive to the cabin ambience, but it's dead easy to make the LED's remote, and mount them somewhere in the instrument binnacle.

Great stuff.
Xmas tomorrow.... don't think an STi will fit in the sock....
Bought myself that Subaru DVD available from Halfords to tide myself over....
Yep just doing my homework before I get the car so I'm going to hopefully avoid any potential pitfalls.
Cheers

definatly get a knocklink fitted 1st m8, although they are pretty diy friendly to fit if you wanna havea go yourself.
I went down the same route you have with getting my background info on this site before i got hold of my TYPE R ver 5 and it's been an invaluable source of advice. Mine was a 1 owner car bought on the private market here in the UK and had a full de-cat and a aftermarket panel filter fitted which aroused my suspicions that the car would be DETTING.
Although the prev owner was confident that a knocklink and other informative mods (gauges etc) were not worth installing as "they cannot save the engine from going pop!" I felt these were the first things I had to get on the car and the knocklink payed itself off immediatly!.
It was detting and overboosting like a Bich!! with the knocklink lighting up like a crimbo tree on avery blip of WOT!! causing fuel cut reguarly.
The car had always been runnig on O.max and Pro-boost and is a low miler at about 20k so maybe thats why it had'nt gone pop until then but as they say,,, ignorance is bliss which I think the prev owner strongly believed in!
Anyway,,, got it under control now with a tek3 re-map from pat at Xtreme scoobies.
Also,,got oil temp/press/boost/afr which are great for monitoring the state of the engine and waiting for the oil to get upto operating temp
Good luck fella and happy xmas!
